Prince of Thorns Dug Its Claws Into Me

Well everyone has one of these once in a while- a chance to say “I was wrong”. And I am so happy to do that. Because this is one of those rare occasions when I gave a book another chance and ended up loving it. Despite having read the first chapter, though “nah this is not for me”, and given this up- thanks to Drew’s endless recommendations for this book and author, I decided to give it another go- and I am so glad I did!

I adored the tone of the book and the voice of the protagonist. In fact I especially liked the dark, twisted main character. Because if you like anti-heroes, then this is the perfect book for you- Jorg is definitely the mother of all anti-heroes.

Other than that, this book is fast paced and intense. The setting- a futuristic fantasy version of our world- is right up my street. I am so intrigued about where this series goes. And with such good plotting I feel very certain in the knowledge that the rest of this series is going to be one hell of a ride.

Rating: 4½/5 bananas

Have you read this? Did you like it? And what book did you end up loving after giving it a second chance? Let me know in the comments?

  1. I absolutely loved this series. The female characters leave a bit to be desired but other than that it is a fresh and intricate look at morality and what someone can accomplish when they throw it by the wayside. Jorg definitely isn’t a role model but he makes for one very interesting read. I actually turned a coworker on to this series a couple of weeks ago!

  2. Sounds like a book I would enjoy! I would get started on this right away except, just got to know it’s part of a series. hnnng *mutters something about commitment*
but I’ll put it on my soon-TBR list.

(have I mentioned I love how you rate in bananas? I do.)

  5. Oh I’m so excited to see what you thought of this book! This one surprised me too. I started it and at first thought, hmm, I don’t know if this is going to be for me, but then I was so intrigued by the despicable main character, having never read a book with such a wholly deplorable protagonist, that I continued… and really enjoyed it!

Jorg really is the mother of all anti-heroes. His ruthlessness and arrogant determination weirdly became his greatest strengths, and it was kind of refreshing to have such a dishonourable hero (who doesn’t just end up revealing their gooey kind-hearted core). I’m also intrigued to see where the series goes, I haven’t continued yet but plan to.

Anyway, cool you gave it a second chance and liked it too, I’ll be keen to read your reviews of the sequels, I imagine you’ll get to them before I do! (I’m a slow reader and have a few others in the queue before it).

Yes, it really was- I really liked that about the book and it’s what ended up hooking me until the end. Me too!!
haha well we’ll see- I have so many books to read right now, that unless the next one falls into my lap soon, it’ll be quite a wait- let me know how you get on with it too!! 🙂

      1. Yes anti-heroes are just so much fun!! And I can relate to having too many books to read – especially when these several-book-long series start to stack up. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see which one of us gets to it first! 🙂

  6. It’s good you gave this another chance, everyone deserves one. You will enjoy the next book, and the next. Lawrence’s writing just keeps getting better. The Wheel of Oshiem was awesome, and I’m looking forward to Red Sister very much

  7. It seems like Drew has been getting in everyone’s ear lately! I’m so glad to see that his fantasy bug is spreading. 🙂 I haven’t read any Lawrence, but I started reading Joe Abercrombie books thanks to Drew. Lawrence is next! Great quick review– I love your concise perspective!
