The Great British Bake Off Book Tag

the great british bake off book tag

Hello! Long time no see 😉 I’ve been a bit busy the last week and not had the chance to come on here as much as I’d like, anyway *excuses excuses* I thought I’d do a quick tag today to make it up 😉 And no, I don’t watch the show, but everyone likes cake, I like cake and I’m craving cake right now, so cue CAKE TAG (that sentence just sound like cake cake CAKKKE!)

Thank you so much to the wonderful Zezee for tagging me to do this! Her blog is a scrumptious array of awesome things- so if you haven’t checked it out yet… what are you doing with your time?!

Rules:

Link back to the creator Zaheerah’s post.

Tag people or don’t. Just have fun.

Ready, get set, Bake! (or tag)

Amateur Baker: A book that is self-published

masters and beginners version 2

By my lovely friend Daley Downing!

Soggy Bottom: A book that had a great start but a disappointing ending

wings

Because why on earth did they have to turn out to be plants? (okay, that’s not technically the end, so not a spoiler- but seriously it can’t really be uphill from there 😉 )

#Bingate: A book you great frustrated with and had to DNF

wicked

This is hard cos I rarely DNF things cos I’m frustrated (boring me is more of a putdownable offence)- heck I rarely DNF things period. So I’m cheating by saying Wicked because I originally quit reading this cos I hated the writing style (I went back to it six months later and finished it- still hated the writing though)

Junior Bake Off: A children’s book

tiger who came to tea

Just cos it’s classic.

A Hollywood Handshake: A book that impressed you

bear and the nightingale

I’ve not reviewed this yet, but mannnn this BLEW ME AWAY!

Signature Challenge: A book that you would recommend to your friends and family

man's search for meaning

Frankly I recommend this to everyone.

Technical Challenge: Books that you read without knowing much beforehand; rank them from worst to best

Some of these were happy accidents… others not so much.

marked

Honestly, I feel like I was a victim of blurb and cover fraud with this one cos it was not what I thought it would be. If I’d known what this was actually about, I wouldn’t have picked it up.

twilight

Believe it or not, I read this before it was “cool”- I know, I know I’m a Twilight Hipster 😉 I also think the blurb made me think of a *totally* different type of book.

facing the light

Totally underrated.

we were liars

A lot of the marketing around this book was about how you shouldn’t know anything going in- and that recommendation is completely correct, so I’m not going to tell you *anything* (except that it’s brilliant, go read it 😉 )

poison chris wooding

I picked this up on a whim, knowing nothing about it, and it was one of the best surprises of my life. Also, the blurb tells you very little about the actual plot, so it was even more unexpected than I could have imagined.

The Finalists: A favorite trilogy

daughter of smoke and bone

Okay in the interest of not using the same trilogy for the millionth time, I’m gonna go with Daughter of Smoke and Bone because I’m currently rereading (very slo-o-owly) the first one with Being a Book Nerd and loving it!

An Extra Slice: A favorite companion book

wizard heir

Okay, so these books are pretty unusual as companion fantasy books. They do have an overarching plot that becomes more involved as it goes on, but I definitely consider the second one a companion to the first (and you could probably just start at book 2)

That’s it! I tag:

Steph (cos I know how much you like cake 😉 ), Claire (ditto), Nel, Jess @MudandStars, Charley @BooksandBakes, Katie @NeverNotReading, Beth@ReadingEveryNight, Rebecca @MyLifeAsASportsFangirlMarcia and Melting Pot and Other Calamities

And for everyone else- what’s your favourite type of cake? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Oh my god I LOVE this tag! I just finished watching this series of the Great British Bake Off (for the first time ever) and I have discovered a new TV obsession of mine, it’s such a fun show and I got very involved in who was voted off each week. 🙂
Also I love your picks for each question. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is an all-time favourite series of mine (honestly it’s incredible but Laini Taylor is one of those authors who can do no wrong in my opinion) and oh I have The Bear and the Nightingale on my to-read list still. I really can’t wait to read it because I’ve heard non stop amazing things about it.
Thanks so much for the tag, I can’t wait to take part in this one. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thank you so much!! hehe well I’m glad it’s good- I’m sure I’d enjoy it if I ever checked it out, cos what’s not to like about a programme about cake? 😉
Thank you very much!! Ahh so glad you agree!! I’m really looking forward to her other books 😀 And I really recommend it- it was wonderful!! You’re very welcome!! 😀 ❤

          1. Oh good. Wasn’t sure if you’d been hidden away in a nunnery or something to not have at least seen cheesecake. Glad my worries were without merit.

I’d eat it by the truckful, except it’s so rich that all I can actually manage are little tiny slices…

  2. Tiramisu!!! And now I’m also greatly craving for cake! Oh, and I’m quite surprised to see Wicked in that category. That book seemed like something that was adored by the community and all! Have you ever reviewed it? Would love to know more about that series, or just that book hahaah

    1. mmm yum! good choice!! I know right- when I finished this, I immediately went in search of cake 😉 Yeah, a lot of people really like it. No, cos I had such a choppy experience with it I didn’t end up having much to say other than “PHEW IT’S OVER” 😉 haha 😂 It’s just a very weird writing style that I found too off-putting. Plus it’s not as cheesy and light hearted as the musical (which I love and was why I picked it up in the first place 😉 )

      1. That makes sense. I don’t really see it around much, besides the musical, and just assumed that it was one of those beloved series out there. What you point out are definitely interesting though. Who would’ve thought hahah It’s not like I planned on reading it, but it’s nice to know that it isn’t something that is loved by every single reader out there! 😀

  3. I’ve never watched this show before but the TV site I write for has a ton of people covering it so I’ve always been curious. Plus these questions are incredibly fun and I actually started to read Wicked, but I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I was a little too young for it then, but it didn’t interest me in the same way the musical did.

  4. I loved your answers here! I’m so glad that The bear and the nightingale surprised you so much – you make me want to read it now 🙂
I agree that we should go into We Were Liars pretty much blind, in order to be really surprised and like it 🙂
I haven’t read anything by Laini Taylor and I want to so badly ahah, hopefully I can read DAughter of Smoke and Bone sometime soon 😀

  5. Time has lately been a factor that is pretty much consuming everything of me as well. Running behind with almost everything lol. Still you made a fun post for this one. These tags are getting more outrageous by the moment lol. 😂😂

  6. Hahahahaha, “FRANKLY” you’d recommend it to anyone! I see what you did there! (Shhhhh, just pretend like it’s a pun and I’m not being extremely insensitive because that book makes me uncomfortable…)

I also adored the Bear and the Nightengale. A lot of people found it too slow, but I thought it was lovely.

    1. hahahahaha 😂😂😂 Ok you win the prize for picking out my lame joke!! No one else noticed lol 😂😂 Yes, I actually deliberately put that in there just to make myself chuckle 😉 (also it’s really not as bad as you think, it’s surprisingly uplifting- which makes no sense, but it’s true)

Yay- I’m glad you liked it!! Nah it’s not too slow- it was perfect!!

  7. Cool you are re-reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I love that trilogy too. You’ve made me curious about Poison and We Were Liars now… and I’m looking forward to seeing your review of The Bear and the Nightingale!! (I haven’t read it yet but it sounds like it’s well worth picking up)

    1. Thank you!! It’s amazing!!! Rereading it is reminding me of all the reasons I loved it so much 😀 Oh you should definitely check out Poison- it’s really unique!! And We Were Liars was so well written- but the style is a bit hit and miss with people. Thank you!! It was amazing!!

  8. Aww thanks for the shout out and for doing the tag! I’m crazy busy too so I understand. Your comments on the Soggy Bottom answer made me think of the M. Night Shyamalan film, The Happening. And that’s all I’ll say in case you haven’t seen it and want to. …just a warning tho, it sucks.
I need to post my review too of the Bear and the Nightingale. I’m in the minority though because I didn’t like it much. I was super disappointed because I thought I would like it.

  9. The GBBOff is such an addictive show.. I watched this year’s one with great dedication! 😀

Ooooh! And I can’t wait for your review of The Bear and the Nightingale! So glad it gets the Hollywood handshake though!

  10. I love watching GBBO so this was such a fun tag! I’m sorry (and kind of ashamed haha) to admit that I haven’t actually read any of the books you’ve mentioned, but most are on my tbr! I’d say I most want to read A Daughter of Smoke and Bone, it’s been on my tbr for so long, and I’ve heard really good things about it! The Bear and the Nightingale is also on my tbr, but I only added it for the hype/the cover oops (it’s gorgeous though!) and I don’t really know what it’s about.
