Because I refuse to let 2017 go apparently…
Thanks so much to Modern Witch’s Bookshelf for tagging me to do this one- she writes super fun content, so be sure to check her out!
-
Favourite Male Character of the Year
Just one? Argh this is so hard!! I think I’m gonna have to go with the indomitable Kaz Brekker (I just wanted to use the word indomitable)
-
Favourite Female Character of the Year
Vasilisa- I got into a whole conversation with my sister about why she’s such a great female character- she’s selfless without being a pushover, she’s enchanting yet not in a cheesy way, and she’s mentally tough as old boots. While she has some of the idealised nature of a fairy tale character, she also manages to be perfectly realistic, which is quite a feat!
-
Most Relatable Character of the Year
Hmm I’m not sure that I read any characters this year that stood out as especially relatable, but I did find Furiously Happy relatable in general. Since this is non-fiction, I guess that means I find the author relatable? Although not the taxidermy- that shit creeps me out.
-
Couple of the Year
Lena and Kostos from The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants– yes I read the whole series this year- I regret nothing.
- Villain of the Year
LOOK AWAY EVERYONE THAT HASN’T READ THIS- but yeah, Adelina made a great villain. And she also (*massive spoiler*) had a great redemption arc.
-
Most Disliked Character of the Year
I HATED Beatrice from Wideacre *so much*. I’m not sure whether she was supposed to be the most detestable character ever written, yet that’s what she is. Hands down.
-
Royal of the Year
Prince Jorg! Hands down!
-
Sidekick / Non Main Character of the Year
Nighteyes- easily.
-
Sibling of the Year
This is easy in terms of knowing which book has the best siblings- but hard given that all of them are so good!! I’m gonna go with Ethan though I could say any of the Glass brothers!
-
Free Choice Award: create your own award! The Oh-My-Goodness-This-Character-Needs-A-Hug Award
Yes, I made that awfully specific on purpose, just so I could pick Seph from Wizard Heir- because oh my goodness he needs a hug.
For once I’m not tagging anyone specific, because I know how long it takes to get to these and it’s already 2018, so I tag anyone and everyone that wants to do this! Feel free!!
What was your favourite character of the year? Let me know in the comments!
Great post and of course this only means that I have missed out on quite a number of good characters (yes the to read list just keeps on growing 😂😂).
As I haven’t read a lit of books last year unfortunately I actually had to think a bit about your question. But I’m going to go with Sister Mirya, the raven haired warrior goddess from Sisters of Battle. She was just awesome 😀😀

Thank you so much!! hmm tempted to say all of them, but if you like contemporary try Sisterhood of the travelling pants and Six of Crows is something everyone loves! 😀 Also Bear and the nightingale or Prince of thorns if you like fantasy… okay I’ll stop now 😉

Just ordered all of them 🙈😂 thank you!

Mine of last year was Nevada Baylor from the Hidden Legacy series. I want to pick her whole family but since I can only choose one, I’m going with her. She is so badass, and fun and caring and loving and just the whole package for me! Great list btw. I haven’t read any of those books though I do hope to read Prince of Thorns this year.

Happy new year!

Ha, I’m not ready to let 2017 go either. Part of me still can’t get around referring to it as last year, and I keep wanting to write the date as 2017 as well! 😀
I haven’t read many of the books you picked for this tag but oh I loved Kaz. If I’d read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom last year he’d be my choice for favourite male character as well. I think when it comes to villains Adelina was one of my favourites of the year, her development throughout the trilogy was exceptional, and oh you’re making me even more excited for The Bear and The Nightingale by featuring it in this tag! 😀
Great post, and great answers for this one as well. 🙂 ❤

Great post! It’s so fun to spend time poring over what we’ve read, isn’t it? I guess that’s why we blog. My favorite book character of this year was Jiko from A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki.

OMG, thank you for the laugh: Most Relatable Character of the Year — that character / cover was hilarious… and if that is who you are! LOVE IT!
And thanks for the mention on the Glass brothers. Ethan was voted the favorite, but I’ve got this thing about Zach…

Favorite character? Amelia peabody (Elizabeth Peters aka Barbara Vine, aka Ethel Merz- real name) Harriet Vane (Dorothy Sayers), Anything by Ngao Marsh, Claire Malloy (Joan Hess’ first series), anything by Sharyn McCrumb, although bimbos of the death star- a good-natured spoof of sci fi and sci fi writers- is definitely in my top ten.Oh, and Miss Seeton (Witch Miss Seaton) and….

Hehe I specifically picked my first two reads of 2018 that had “vanishing” in the title to vanish 2017 off into memories so I got a chuckle reading you were hanging onto 2017.

Since I’ve been reading the classics lately my favorite male hero is still Prince Andei in War and Peace. It’s going to take someone really special to beat him out. Just finished Scarlet and Black by Stendhal and Julien Sorel the anti-hero is so smart and stupid at the same time — I love him. One of his love interests Matilde is a bored intellectual who idolizes heroic men of old. She’s a bit crazy in love–i can relate. 🙂

Now that’s a brilliant choice!! Honestly I love that character and I read that two years ago 😀 Amazing book!! Oh yes, I remember your review, he sounded like such a well fleshed out character. Great choices!

Kaz Brekker is such an amazing character and my favourite from the Six of Crows duology (though it’s hard to pick just one, as all of them are great). 😀 And I can’t say anything about any other character on your list, as I have read none of those books – though some of them are on my TBR.

I’m totally doing it too. 🙂
Though I didn’t like The Bear and the Nightingale much, I did like Vasilisa. She’s pretty darn awesome.
And yea, Nighteyes!!! Best sidekick.
My fav character of 2017… probably Durzo Blint from The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. Durzo Blint is the whole reason why I liked the book.

Oh cool- I really need to read Brent Weeks at some point (and I think I got one of his books on a kindle offer last week, so I really have no excuse now 😉 )

My husband kicked me out of our bedroom when I was reading Furiously Happy because I was laughing so hard while he was trying to sleep 🙂 I got the opportunity to meet Jenny last year and hear her speak… she is a hoot! And yes, the taxidermy stuff is super freaky. Although I love that she messes with her husband with her taxidermy animals lol

hehehe oh my goodness- my family were the same when I was reading Furiously Happy- cos I was sitting in the living room laughing my head off! That’s absolutely amazing! haha yes! Honestly, I’ve always had a bit of a thing about those, they freak me out, so that was the one part of the book I wasn’t keen on- although the parts about how she wound her husband up with it made me laugh! (at the same time as cringing in fear 😉 )

Your final award haha. Love it! But let’s be serious for a moment! Vasilisa!!! I ❤ her as far as female characters go. Hands down, she takes the cake and eats it. She embodies everything I look for in a protagonist. Also happy to see characters from some of my upcoming reads made your list 😉

Amazing tag! You made me really pumped for Katherine Arden’s series with such a fangirling description of Vasilisa and reminded me that I still need to finish the Sisterhood books D: UGH (Lena and Kostos were not an item anymore at the time of my reading, so I’m glad that drama is over!)
I love how Wideacre keeps making an appearance in your posts… In the most detestable way possible xD
Hope you have a wonderful 2018! And may your lovely posts continue to be lovely 😀

Jorg! Man, I read that trilogy in 2014 and I still bat for team Jorg! So hard 😀 I think if I ever do a reread it will be of Broken Empire trilogy… just so good!
Kaz is a good one as well, I admit but he was never my favourite character from the duology for some reason. He’s cunning and intelligent and takes no cr#p but he still feels ‘distant’ to me… which he is! 😀
Nice list!
