A plague o’ both your houses! Or you know, just a common cold… I’m getting a bit bored of saying “guys I’m ill again”, but yeah, I’m ill again (also bored of being “ill again” only my immune system doesn’t seem to care). So that was my really long winded way of saying sorry for being so sporadic on the blog this week!
Anyway, I couldn’t sleep last night (obviously that does wonders for my health) and I got to writing this tag post- so even though I have a gazillion people to reply to and should probably just rest a bit I’M POSTING IT BECAUSE I AM ADDICTED AND HAVE PROBLEMS GUYS. *Ahem* anywayyy thank you so much to the lovely Little Book Nook for tagging me for this one- I clearly couldn’t resist after reading your awesome answers 😉 And what better way to round off a week of lovey-dovey posts…
THE RULES
- Please PINGBACK to Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities.
- You can choose ten romance fails from ANY media you like: books, movies, anime, manga, T.V shows, or Webtoons. You can even mix them up if you want.
- You can choose funny fails or serious ones; for the serious ones, phrase it humorously. Remember, this is a fun tag! It’s not meant to be serious.
- Mention who’s who in the fails. (I.E, who fails and who is the recipient of the failure). If there isn’t recipient, per se, just state the couple (or non-couple).
- Optional: Rank the failures from least extreme to most extreme.
- 5 failures at LEAST.
- Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.
What I love about this one is that you can mix it up with all different media- and I’m gonna do just that… (also gonna try and keep to the rule of making them progressively worse).
Jon/Dany (Game of Thrones)– you guys know of my undying love for this series, but it’s the kind of series that sinks ships faster than that iceberg sunk the Titanic. I could fill a book with all the FAILS of relationships here- in fact GRRM has managed five (and a half) yet *spoilers if you haven’t seen season 7* this is right up there (just behind Cersei and Jaime). The reason this goes on my list ahead of other dysfunctional couples is because guys I was one of the schmocks that wanted this to happen and I’m so so sorry!! When it actually did happen my response was pretty much NOOOOO! Because, once my other theories got proved right, it became irrevocably EWW.
Dorian/Celaena (Throne of Glass)– okay so I didn’t actually ship this one, but I was more on board with it than Celaena/Chaol (pretty sure I’ve made my disdain for Chaol clear). To be honest, I don’t think they suit each other at all. It is interesting though that this one failed because of Maas’ original premise: “What if Cinderella was an assassin and went to the ball not to dance with the prince, but to kill him?”
Raskolnikov/Sonya (Crime and Punishment)– *spoilers* cos he’s a murderer, really obnoxious and treats her poorly if my memory serves. And she’s so messed up that she takes it. And then follows him off to Siberia- righhhht.
Rachel/Joey (Friends)– Little Book Nook had this one too- and I must concur! Worst. TV. Pairing. Ever. And so unnecessary. Just why did this even happen again?
Sirius/Anyone/Me (Harry Potter)– was I the only one fantasising that someone was going to come in on their white horse (/hypogriff, but that’s a bit “been there, done that”) and give him the romance he deserved? (Spoilers: that’s not gonna happen) I know I’ve mentioned him a lot lately, but he was my favourite character.
Ally/Noah (The Notebook)– cos I not so secretly hate that film #sorrynotsorry. Actually a little sorry at all the rage that comment will inevitably attract- but hear me out. It’s not that it’s a terrible movie it’s just that I hate the love interests and everything they represent- aka you can be horrible, dysfunctional people to each other and screw over a perfectly decent third wheel, and everything works out just fine. Ugh. Cheating is not cool and movies like this just glorify it!! Speaking of cheating…
Tatiana/Alexander (The Bronze Horseman)– another controversial one, but I HATED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!! I HATED the contrived Cinderella plot to gain false sympathy, I DESPISED the control-freak, pervy love interest, and I COULDN’T STAND the useless mc. Also why do they spend half the book arguing over whether they should be together WHILST CHEATING? And why is it treated like martyrdom when Tatiana carries on behind her sister’s back WHILST CHEATING? And then it came to the sex and just… ugh- nothing worse than sex scenes between two people you hate. Oh yeah, usual disclaimer about no such thing as spoiling shit books. Sorry if you were desperate to read this.
Christian/Ana (Fifty Shades of Grey)– because STALKING ≠ SEXY. Look I get it, I’m not judging people for reading erotica- but this shit is ABOMINABLE (and dudettes have you not heard of this wonderful thing called the INTERNET?! I’m not trying to corrupt young minds or anything, cos the people reading this were mostly mums, only inform you that there’s equally awfully written porn available FOR FREE… so yeah just try google next time, then we won’t have to hear about insufferable books like this polluting bestseller lists- thanks!)
Annnd I don’t think I can do anything worse than that so I’ll stop there.
I tag: Melanie, Kat, Michel, Zezee, Dani, Samantha, Lucinda and Jessica
So what romances in fiction do you consider the biggest fail? And dare I ask- what do you think of my picks here? Let me know in the comments!
haha! Thanks for the tag. This is going to take some thought.
I agree about Sirius and about Rachel/Joey (Friends).
oooooh! Things are coming to mind already, this will be fun :]

No, no, no! Why did you want Jon and Dany to happen hahaha I am now forever partially going to blame you, because I did NOT want that whatsoever hahaha
Sirius was sooo amazing! On another note, can we have ships with ourselves in this, because … then I am suddenly going to be able to come up with a looot of things? Thanks so much for tagging me, but I could think of surprisingly few fails … except for Dany and Jon hahaha

hahahah I know I MADE SUCH A BIG MISTAKE!! Honestly I wanted it back when Dany was still off in the desert with baby dragons and Jon was at the wall/beyond the wall. Even having read the books I *never* thought it would actually happen (I still don’t think it’ll happen in the books tbh)
hehehhe he was and I have no idea- I just decided that I wanted to do that- so I say yes (cos it’s not in the rules that we can’t 😉 ) You’re welcome! Yeah it was actually hard to get started with this, cos mostly I remember the relationships I liked rather than ones that didn’t sail, but then once I got going I thought of a few 😉 haha!
LikeLiked by 3 people
Really? Cause I always thought it would happen hahaha I just thought that was like one of the theories that always seemed the most legit or that it was even written in there but in code or something. Anyway, we know there are characters in the book that don’t even exist on the show, so those two could still be different.
Yeah, I think I mostly remember the ones that sailed rather than sunk too, but I will do this tag … soon haha

haha well you’re wiser than me 😉 I had a theory that they’d be related, but then I thought that meant they wouldn’t get together (cos GRRM wouldn’t do *that* to his heroes… gosh I’m so dumb to have not seen it coming) hehe true!
Yeah absolutely! Lol! I look forward to your answers!!

Even if they do end up together in the book, I’m sure it will be done better than in the show. We need to remember that they still don’t know they are related. Still, I want her to help them win, but I don’t want her to be Queen, but for Jon to be king. She’s too egotistical and sometimes arrogant, while he is a person people can admire for his modesty and integrity. Can you tell that Jon Snow is one of my favourite characters? Him and Arya! She’s so cool!

Yeah that’s for sure! And I agree. I’m with you there- I definitely think she’ll play her part, but I’ve thought she’d die in the final battle for years anyway. And yeah I agree with you. hehehe yes! They’re my favourites too! They’re the best!

I’d actually rather see dany end up with the iron born chick! Haha! I’m really not into the same sex romances, but in think that would just work. The iron born girl is just so damned cool and her masculinity works so well for her. I love her line when she first met dany when the subject of marriage came up. Lol!
LikeLiked by 1 person
haha I think that could work actually- I dunno though, she could be another Daario Naharis character for her (and I think the Yara’s gonna end up with that person from Dorne whose name I never remember) hehehe yes- that was fantastic!

Haha! If I’d be a lesbian, I’d totally go for yara! I can never remember her name! Ha! And you’re right, she would just be another play thing to dany. 😁

Ah hahaha!!! You’re funny! Dany is pretty, but that’s it. Yara is such a bad ass, though, even without dragons! So, what she lacks in classic good looks she more than makes up for in charisma and personality! 😂

hehehe yes- that’s true! But I don’t always make the smart choice 😂😂😂 Although, if we’re talking people I’m actually attracted too, I do get starry eyed over Jon- so maybe if I was a lesbian I’d make good choices- it’s hard to know lol 😂

Ok, well, as a straight woman, I have to agree about Jon. He’s totally the sexiest male character in the show, and books, too. I really loved the dynamic between him and his wildling girl. She always made me laugh with her cute accent and goofy ways! She would have been good for him, to make him smile and be happy. 😉 Now, that was a scene that brought me to tears, when she died! 😭
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah I agree completely! Although I was keen on Rob in the show too (mostly cos of the actor- cos he makes a lot of mistakes) I agree- they’re dynamic was amazing! And I always think of that when people say there’s no romance in GOT- I mean that’s really romantic! Ahh me too!! 😭

People actually say there’s no romance in got? Really? They’ve got everything! As for Rob, well, the idea of him wasn’t too bad, but he was not one of my favourites. I just found him a little boring, but it was horrible what they did to him in the show. I think his wife survives in the books, if I remember correctly.

I know- it’s one of the biggest motivators. I was one of my favourites… sadly. But I think it had a lot to do with how charismatic the actor was cos I wasn’t especially keen on the character in the books. Yeah she did- but I don’t know if she’ll ever turn up again.

Ok, interesting, because I wasn’t so keen on the actor. Funny how we all have our particular likes and dislikes. To be fair, though, the actor didn’t planks role inadequately or anything, so I have no real complaint, just my personal taste. The little mormont girl is pretty cool, too. I hope she’ll take a more active role in the next season and in the next books.

Thanks for the tag! I’ll try to get to it this weekend. Gotta figure out how to do pingbacks and tags! 😂 It will be a fun challenge to come up with some romance fails, but I must agree with your first. Jon and Dany just doesn’t work. Not in the show, at least. Yes, it’s messed up at they are related, but I could overlook that if I didn’t dislike her so much. I mean, she’s ok, but I don’t really want her to succeed and be queen. Jon should be king, and the match between them seemed forced and unnatural. It didn’t feel believable.
LikeLiked by 2 people
You’re welcome! haha no problem! Awesome!! And yes it really doesn’t work and I don’t think they gave it time to develop properly tbh. Actually I take that back- no amount of time would’ve made it less weird once it was established they’re related. Oh gosh I’m with you one hundred percent in that! Honestly I used to be a fan of her, but I’ve gone off her massively since she started, you know, burning people alive. Yeah I also didn’t think it was as believable as it could’ve been.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Well, she can burn people alive if they really deserve it,it in the show when she burns that father and his son who were only acting in honour (wasn’t it Sam’s father and brother?), ya, that was pretty low. She starts coming across as tyrannical. Her ego gets really huge. I hate that she demands Jon Snow to kneel and submit to her, and I wish he would have refused. Grrr. I like the north because of their love of freedom. They are rebels with a cause and I love it! So, someone saying kneel or else should be told where they can shove it! Ha!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah that’s what I think- I don’t see what they did wrong- it was actually honourable for them to stay loyal to their queen- so why on earth couldn’t she take them as prisoner’s of war? (and yeah it was) I also don’t see it as tactically smart, because people won’t feel loyal to her for that. I definitely agree with you- and I really really wanted him to refuse. I was so frustrated that he bent the knee. hahaha yes!!

I guess that’s the big difference between script writers and book authors. The show was loads better when they still were going off the books, but this last season it was really obvious that they had completely parted from the books. I can’t really blame them, since GRRM has failed to get the next book out and it’s been freaking YEARS!!! It is what it is, but it’s a shame, because the show was wonderful when it was still following the books.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah I absolutely agree with that. I do get why and I feel bad for both parties- but it’s just such a shame cos it’s really not as good as when it was following the books, like you said

Exactly. I do love the show, and all throughout, they’ve done an amazing job of bringing the books to like, and even though the last season was disappointing, I don’t blame them. And I’ll continue watching regardless. Hopefully, the next season will be better, though…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah for sure. I totally why too- because a lot of the things I didn’t like were clearly based on things that are probably coming up in the books that GRRM might not have worked out yet (possibly because it’s hard to figure out how to give the Night King a dragon for instance 😉 ) Yeah hopefully!

I’ve never understood 50 Shades Of Grey. Romance isn’t typically my genre, and I haven’t read the books, but it just seems like a glorified stalker/abusive relationship. What is the appeal?

I liked The Bronze Horseman but I read it like a decade ago. Now I’m sort of wondering if it would hold up to a reread now that I’m older and wiser (well, older)!
The Joey/Rachel thing was a way of delaying the Ross and Rachel reunion and throwing a little tension into Joey and Rachel’s friendship with Ross. That is literally the ONLY explanation for the writers doing something so…bizarre.
I’ve never been a fan of The Notebook either. I read the book a long time ago and found it very “blah”. My impression of the film was similar. I didn’t like the characters either, so it didn’t much matter to me what happened to them. Yes, Alzheimers is a tragic, terrible disease, but it couldn’t make me care about them.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Ah I think that’s fair enough. haha! Well I don’t know if it just hit me at the wrong time, but to be honest that it didn’t help that it was so hyped when I did read it.
Yeah definitely thought that too. But it was so… weird and I kinda thought they’d already established that it wasn’t going to happen from Rachel’s perspective- so to actually go through with it just felt all wrong.
Ah I never read the book- but that was cos I thought the film was so blah. And yeah, I agree about the characters.

I gave up on Friends after I’d been out of the loop for a bit (I don’t remember what was going on, but something happened and I missed like all of season 7 and 8, or thereabouts), and then I came across a later episode, and Joey and Rachel were kissing, and I was like, “OMG, WTH, EEWWW!!!” I NEVER thought they were an appropriate coupling. After Ross screwed Rachel over, I HATED that they ended up back together. I kept wanting Ross to either leave the show, or for Rachel to find some nice guy *not part of the group, like Phoebe did* and tell Ross in no uncertain terms to go to hell. It’s why by the time I heard the show was ending, I couldn’t care less. Except yay for Phoebe, for (mostly) getting out of that incredibly dysfunctional, co-dependent nonsense.
And, yeah, although I don’t read erotica, anyway, my BIGGEST concern about Fifty Shades is how it portrays controlling and manipulative relationships as okay and even romantic. NOT okay, Hollywood. (Isn’t that industry the leader of the feminist power stuff that’s going crazy lately?)
Lol, yeah, Sirius did deserve a wonderful partner. Oh, well! I secretly hoped Luna and Neville would end up together, too!

Ah fair enough! hahhaa yeah that happened for a very few episodes and I think it was frankly traumatising for everyone! So wrong! Such a pointless plot twist. Honestly that would’ve made some sense- but while I sided with Rachel in pretty much all their romantic entanglements, I found them both pretty dysfunctional (not always in a bad way), and I was still happy they ended up together (although my favourite pairing in that show will always be Monica/Chandler)
Oh gosh yes the relationship in Fifty Shades is borderline abusive (definitely manipulative behaviour from Grey) I was not okay with it either (pahahaha Hollywood- yes, one of the most dysfunctional industries out there- telling us all how to behave- forgive me if I find it laughable!)
heheh yes he did! And yeah- I was so disappointed that didn’t happen too!

After the Jon/Dany reveal that romance became a little weird (and I can’t be the only one that thought the timing of them getting together with the other reveal (no spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet) made it even weirder right? I mean they cut the two scenes together!)
Also Rachel and Joey were definitely a couple I didn’t enjoy seeing together in Friends, I would have liked it is they’d just remained friends. Then again in that show no couple can beat Monica and Chandler! 😀

The prequels are so terrible! 6+ hours of my life I’ll never get back. I convinced myself I liked the first one when it came out then decided that was stupid. The rest I kept hoping would get better. I mean if Ewan McGregor can’t save your movie, it has some serious problems!

hehehe yeah I totally understand that. I’ve actually seen the first one (twice, once when I was really young and it nearly put me off star wars for life) but the rest… man I couldn’t get through the second movie it was so bad. hahaha yes!!

Aside from the few I am not familiar with, I think you need this one haha! “*spoilers if you haven’t seen season 7* this is right up there (just behind Cersei and Jaime). ” bahahahah… I remember watching and just yelling at the tv for someone to stop it and not let it happen, when only a season ago I was shipping them myself lol.

Rachel and Joey was just so forced and cringe-y. I still don’t know what to feel about Jon and Daenerys, though! They could make a good team, but at the same time, it feels a little forced as well

Ahh I totally agree with you!! Yeah that’s true- it’s just… well there’s other reasons they shouldn’t be together.

Hehe! This is so funny! And I couldn’t agree more about Sirius, Joe/Rachel and Shades of grey – and finally somone who says that the last one is what it is – ABDOMINAL! 😁

This tag started and ended on a high note hahahah That Jon/Dany thing is quite something. I’m super curious to see if the final season will even dive into the subject and let them know the truth or let it die like most things on the show hahah 😛
