Mid Year Freak Out Tag

orangutan tag 2

So I’ve just realised it’s June and we’re coming up to the middle of the year now… AND HOW THE HELL HAS THAT HAPPENED?!!? Be prepared for lots of exclamation marks and CAPITALISATION because I am having a *freak out*!!!

I kind of wanted to do this post before I went away (#priorities), but didn’t think I’d been tagged… until I checked and saw that I was tagged last year and didn’t do it *coughs awkwardly*. So belated thanks to the wonderful Calliope the Book Goddess for tagging me!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ YET IN 2018

I’ll admit, I cheated by doing the whole post first and then seeing what I’d left out- because THIS IS TOO HARD A QUESTION!!! Basically any book I talk about as the “best” in this post has a good chance of taking the title at the end of the year (unless I read even better books– which I’d hardly complain about). And even after this preamble, I want to put two books in this category- one fiction and one non-fiction:

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2016

Again- choosing one is too difficult- so I’m going with two:

I read and LOVED Girl in the Tower earlier in the year and recently finished Grey Sister (review coming soon) which I liked EVEN MORE than the first one.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

Oh gosh, there are so many, I’m not exactly on top of new releases. But given it’s floating about the blogosphere a lot at the moment and I liked the author’s other book, I’m particularly eager to read Circe

circe

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

I actually have an answer memorised for this: Muse of Nightmares- obviously after reading Strange the Dreamer I cannot frickin wait for the sequel!!

muse of nightmares

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Ah I desperately wanted to like Lonely Hearts Hotelbut it ended up really not being for me. I was recently asked if I read it knowing I wouldn’t like it- the answer to that is obviously not– I don’t go looking for books to dislike. I just think this is really miss-marketed as similar to the Night Circus when it has very different content and reminded me more of Lolita.

lonely hearts hotel

BIGGEST SURPRISE

I’ll admit it- I judged The Hating Game very harshly before I read it, but ended up LOVING it!

the hating game

FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR

One author that I’ve read a lot of this year, that’s kinda new to me is Rick Riordan. I’ve whizzed through the rest of the Percy Jackson series and can’t wait for more!

percy jackson lightning thief

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

That’s gotta be Lazlo Strange from Strange the Dreamer! He’s exactly the kind of character I always get a soft spot for.

strange the dreamer

NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Lira has to be one of my favourite kickass characters of all time- plus it was her voice that called to me and made me fall in love with To Kill a Kingdom!

to kill a kingdom

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

I don’t think I’ve cried over a book as much as Words in Deep Blue EVER before- I basically wept buckets the whole way through the book. If you want to have your heartstrings tugged, man, this is the book for you!

words in deep blue

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

I laughed so hard at My Lady Jane– I think it’s by far one of the funniest books I’ve ever read!

my lady jane

FAVOURITE BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATION

Ermm I haven’t seen any… in fact I haven’t seen any new releases this year. BUT I did fall in love with the Last Kingdom (which is technically a TV show, but whatever, still counts) even if I read the books after watching it.

FAVOURITE POST YOU HAVE DONE THIS YEAR

One of the scariest posts I’ve ever done was on my complicated relationship with Harry Potter– I was so terrified that I posted it and ran away from the computer once I’d done it… but you know what, it turned out to be one of the most satisfying posts I’ve ever written!

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR

Well, I had this given to me as a gift, but it still counts:

eliza and her monsters

WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

I have a few, but the two books on my bedside table, that I don’t have time to read and am now packing to take away, are my top priority:

bedside table books blogger to blogger

Oh and of course my kindle is sitting on top, with a gazillion other books in it that I need to read 😉

COOLIOS! I TAG:

Cynic on Wings, Kat, Marie, Dani, Danielle, Beth, Kelly, Ally, Books of Magic and Sam

That was so fun looking back on a lot of the great reads I’ve had so far this year! So I want to ask you, what’s your favourite of 2018 so far? Let me know in the comments!

I liked your HP post[s]. I obviously fell on the “kill Harry” side of things, so I didn’t comment a lot on the whole re-read, as I can only type out “kill Harry” so many times before I begin to bore even myself 😉

I hope the rest of year finds you finding some really great books. I’ve only had 1 or 2 contenders for Best Book of the Year, so I’m hoping I come across some really good stuff in the second half…

hahahaha fair enough!! 🤣🤣 I’m really glad you liked them though!

Thank you very much- I don’t know how much I’ll be reading at this stage, but I have a few very promising books to read soon which I’m hoping I’ll love 🙂 I hope you have lots more contenders in the second half of the year!

Well…I think I did not have a midyear freak out, but a beginning of the year freakout. So many things to do..(see, read, play) that I at times wonder how on earth I am going to be able to catch up with it all. So…it can always be worse. What isn’t worse however is the fact that your posts are still every bit as entertaining as ever…so really…no need to freak out over that fact 🙂

😀 YOU’RE READING CURSE OF CHALION!!!! 😀 😀 😀 I’m beyond excited. I hope you love it too but if you don’t, I’m still excited to see your thoughts on it. I love that story so much and seriously need to read the sequel asap.
I’m currently making my way through the Hazel Wood. I’m only a few steps in though. Haven’t seen anything yet to hook me.
And I also want to read Circe. I want to get the UK copy because the naked hardback is gorg!

Such a fun post and even more books of which to take note! I have Words in Deep Blue, and I love a book that makes me sob! I am reading so many great things about The Hating Game- I think I’ve judged it too harshly too!

This was so fun to read! I’m probably going to be stealing this one from you and doing it, too. 😉 I’ve been meaning to read The Hazel Wood and I’ve heard so many good things about Circe, too!!

Also, I’m definitely having a mid-year freak out. How is it possible that we are already heading into the middle of June?! Like, it feels like it was just Christmas only a few weeks ago! 😅

I know right, scary to think half a year has flown by! Does the Harry Potter series count as favourites for the year if I read them for the first time? 😂 Always feels like I’m cheating when I use that as an answer

Sorry but I can’t answer this question, it’s always hard and stressful for me to pick one favourite… I am lucky to have read so many great books so far this year…

    Hello!
Haha I kind of had a mid-year freakout when I saw the title of your post, which reminded me that 2018 is almost half over – what!??
I loved reading your answers for this tag. I also enjoyed Strange the Dreamer, and yes Lazlo is very sweet. Circe is on my TBR as well – hope you enjoy this book and let us know how you like it 🙂

I re-read more than is healthy, but I read Howards End for the first time, and I really enjoyed it! I’m actually really fond of modern British literature. (Though Howards End might not actually be modern…is it Georgian? Dang it, I forgot the periods of British literature. I also forgot when Howards End was written.)

I feel like I’m cheating a bit to say that the best book I’ve read so far this year happens to be thirty years old, and one that, although enjoyable, I also found deeply problematic, which makes Alan Hollinghurst’s The Swimming Pool Library a bit difficult to describe.
What really hooked me, though, is how two seemingly completely separate threads were devastatingly brought together in the last few pages, while another remained achingly unresolved. And those things combined made for a very strange experience.

Thanks so much for the tag! I really can’t wait to get around to this one because yeah it’s a lot of fun looking back at what you’ve achieved reading-wise for the first half of the year (on another note how is the year half over already?!)
Great picks for these questions as well. I don’t know if I could choose just one favourite read (Circe is up there though, so I’m sure you’ll love it when you get around to it) but oh I definitely agree with you about Muse of Nightmares being a highly anticipated release of mine too. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
Great post, and again thanks for the tag! 😀 ❤

Girl in the Tower and Grey Sister (or ahem, their first books) are super high on my TBR, as well as Strange the Dreamer and Words in Deep Blue. And I’m glad you loved My Lady Jane and Percy Jackson! They’re absolutely hilarious. 😉 Oh, and I’m currently reading To Kill A Kingdom; I’m loving the characters so far!

Thanks much for the tag! This sounds like a lot of fun. Cheers!!! ❤

The best book I’ve read this year so far is Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore, it’s so beautiful and magic. Muse of Nightmares is definitely my most anticipated 2018 release as well and Lazlo is so dreamy 😍

Loved reading your answers! I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Hazel but i’m glad to hear that you loved it. Grey Sister, The Girl In the Tower, Circe, and Strange The Dreamer are all on my TBR list. I loved The Hating Game! That book was hilarious! I haven’t read My Lady Jane but I want to give it a shot.

I’m so glad you liked The Hazel Wood! I’ve seen mixed things and I have it and I want to like it so bad. The best book of 2018 so far for me has to be a tie between Jane Harpers Aaron Falk series and The Cruel Prince. All three just kept me completely hooked.

I’m impressed you’re able to answer any question with one specific book. Whenever I try that I think of several more and cant’ make up my mind so then I postpone doing the tag and that would be why I’m so behind. LOL

I’m so glad you loved Words in Deep Blue, it was such a beautiful book – and the cover looks amazing as well. And yay for getting Eliza and Her Monsters, it was one of my favorite books so far this year, I love it so very much. My Lady Jane was also such a fun read 😀

Great tags! Cant believe it’s the middle of the year either! The month is almost half over and the Texas heat is already here! Read many of the same books. Loved My Lady Jane and Eliza and Her Monsters! I have to read To Kill a Kingdom! It keeps getting pushed back as I get farther behind in my reading. Thanks for tagging me! It will be fun to compare answers!
