So some of you will know, I was in a MASSIVE book slump while I was away. With everything going on, I struggled to concentrate on reading… until I picked up Mark Lawrence’s Red Queen series. Because one thing I know for sure is that some authors are just perfect for pulling me out of a slump- and Lawrence just so happens to be one of those authors for me.
Prince of Fools– this was *exactly* the action packed, witty book I needed to get me reading again! I’d describe a lot of Mark Lawrence’s work as “read in one sitting” kind of books and this was no exception! As part of the Broken Empire universe, I felt the vivid descriptions built on the world beautifully and the crossover elements worked very well. In fact there were some parts of this book that made me almost prefer it to Prince of Thorns. As always, the sense of voice was incredible and I loved Jalan as a character- dare I say, even more than Jorg. I felt he was relatable, his motivation made sense, his flaws were well thought out and he’s probably Lawrence’s funniest character to date. It was thanks to his persona that I was laughing the whole way through this one. I also liked the way Jalan played off other people. However, I did find that this didn’t quite light the spark under me in the same way as Lawrence’s other books, which is why I gave it:
Rating: 4/5 bananas
Liar’s Key– I always feel transported by Lawrence’s work- and this book was a perfect example of why! Even though this is the 5th book set in this universe, what was remarkable about it was how fresh Lawrence managed to make it. By building on the previous work with deeper connections to the mythological elements, Lawrence created a richer tapestry and added so many layers to the storytelling. The hints of the previous destroyed world, especially the inaccuracies in their interpretations of Florence and Venice, created a sense of history. Subplots, like with the bankers, were really clever and totally worked for me. I also liked the way the dreams interwove with the rest of the tale and formed pieces of a puzzle. What I also liked was Jalan’s developing relationships and the real sense of the character’s progression, without losing a sense of his original identity. I particularly liked how he became a kind of roguish mentor to Hennan and how this showed he was softening (albeit still giving advice like “take the money”).
Rating: 4/5 bananas
Wheel of Osheim– annoyingly, I didn’t take enough notes for this one… but that’s because I was too wrapped up in it. From the intriguing prologue to the epic conclusion, I was transfixed by this story. Again, I loved the mythological side to the story- and really loved the direction that took! I don’t want to spoil anything, so all I’ll say is the world building was intricately mindblowing and the origin of how Aslaug came to be was just perfect. Of course, as a fan of the original trilogy, I also appreciated the Jorg cameo and the repetition of one of my favourite quotes (death isn’t what it was). All in all, it made for another fantastic finale!
Rating: 4½ bananas
So, yeah reading a whole series back to back definitely classifies as snapping me out of a slump! Have you read it? Did you like it? And what’s the last book or series that got you to start reading again? Let me know in the comments!
I haven’t read any of these before but they all sound interesting. I want a good fantasy series that isn’t more than 3 books which is hard to find as of late; is this a trilogy? If so, I’m totally buying them this weekend.

It’s always nice when a book series manages to pull you out of a reading slump. This truly sounds like an amazing series of books, and as usual your reviews make me want to read this (did I say already that I am very glad that you are back? 😊).
As for your question. I’m currently finally reading again thanks to Sarah Lotz who wrote a pretty good novel called The Three, (which you’ve seen on my blog) and I’m now reading it’s sequel Day Four. Which is just as good….so they pulled me out of my reading slump 😊

It seems Mark Lawrence sits forever in my wishlist while my unread pile keeps getting higher… When I find myself in a reading slump I usually turn to science, history and comics.

I’ve only read the first one of these so far, but I really did like Jalan. Something about him is really endearing even though he’s not a great guy, lol.

These sound great! I’ve been trying to tackle a lot of heavy, ‘literature’ novels and losing interest – maybe what I need right is just a rousing, well-told tale and an interesting world to lose myself in!

Now i’m annoyed with myself. I picked the first one up a while back, didnt like the opening chapters and dnfed – even though i’d read good reviews about it. I’ll take a look and see if it’s still available and try to give it a scond chance. Hmmm, i got into a reading slump in the summer but the hating game broke it up… i followed it with uprooted, by Naomi Novik.

Ah that’s a pity- but it’s definitely worth giving it a second chance- I also struggled to get into the first Lawrence book I read and DNF’d it- but I gave it another chance and was glad I did! Ah cool- I love the hating game! And I need to read Uprooted!

Ah, fantastic! I love Lawrence… and your reviews just told me I need to finish this series.. I’ve only read the first book but I remember feeling annoyed with Jalan in parts due to his flaws (I think I was still under the spell of Jorg). Jalan v Jorg- they’re like polar opposites 😀 hahaha… but I remember loving Snorri! Yeah, defo need to catch up with this trilogy now! 🙂

Me too! Awesome- I really do recommend it. And that’s fair enough- Jorg casts quite the spell 😉 haha so true! That’s actually one of the things I loved about it, cos it showed such a great range of characterisation- I’m actually really glad it didn’t end up being just another Jorg! It was a bold move by Lawrence. I loved Snorri so much too!

Fast paced ridiculousness is the best cure for a reading slump I know.

I’ve heard some great things about this trilogy, and about Mark Lawrence’s books in general. The fact that this series managed to get you out of your massive slump is positive review enough I think. 😀
I can’t remember the last book that got me out of a slump, but there are plenty of series I’ve read back to back, sometimes when I get addicted to a series I can’t put it down until I’ve reached the last book.
Great reviews. 🙂 ❤

Lovely review! Although I do have to admit I started to jump to conclusions when I saw Red Queen and slump and my mind went straight to Victoria Aveyard thinking that had put you in a slump. Different author, different series… aha moment. 🙂
