Hello all! Today I thought I’d dedicate a post to something I haven’t talked about much on this blog: friendship! I’ve done loads of posts on romance and even on sisterhood, but this is something I’ve been sorely neglecting. Though not as celebrated, I realised as I started thinking about this that there are SO MANY MORE fictional friendships than I realised. Here are just some of my faves:
Big Little Lies– while essentially a murder mystery, one of this book’s greatest strengths is the focus on female friendship. It not only ties in strongly with the storyline, it also does a fantastic job of creating believable bonds between very different people. For some reason, that just warms my heart!
Prisoner of Azkaban– for many, the most obvious friendship in Harry Potter is obviously the Golden Trio. And I’m not trying to take away from that. It’s just, I can’t help but be intrigued by the Marauder’s story and how they haunt the pages of these books. Speaking of ghosts…
Raven Boys– I love the friendship between the raven boys. Again, these characters are totally unlike each other and yet that’s what makes their connection to each other so compelling. They like each other because of their differences (even if one of them is quite literally dead).
Iron Gold– there are lots and lots of different kinds of relationships in Red Rising (for better or worse) but my favourite by far has to be Darrow and Sevro. Remarkably, it’s still going strong, despite all the trials and tribulations they’ve been through.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone– though this trilogy is very much centred on the romance, it doesn’t mean the theme of friendship is neglected. In fact, for me personally, Zuzana and Karou’s friendship sometimes steal the spotlight.
Six of Crows– again, Bardugo’s books are full of romance, so you won’t be missing out in that department. However, what I also adore about these books is how the Dregs, led by the indomitable Kaz Brekker, would do anything for each other (legal or illegal). On a slightly more conventional note…
The Fellowship of the Ring– I mean, doesn’t every fantasy fan love the moment when the Fellowship declare they will take the Ring to Mordor? With Gimli and Legolas coming together despite their differences, the gap between men and hobbits being bridged, this one was a no-brainer for the list (have to admit that I was a little torn over whether to put this or Thorin and Company… so here’s me giving that a sneaky mention too 😉 )
Red Sister– as you might gather from the title, these books feature sisterhood… well technically speaking they’re killer nuns… Regardless, these books powerfully reflect the bonds of friendship and I am *here* for it.
Aurora Rising– yet another gang of misfits for the list! This is one of my more recent reads, but no less deserving. Once again, Kristoff and Kauffman teamed up for an incredible saga, giving us multiple voices and a bold new cast. Yet here, I felt the focus on friendship was even greater than its predecessor. One thing’s for certain, if you liked the Illuminae Files, I can assure you, you’re in for a treat!
Skyward– something about space operas makes for the perfect friendship-forming environment, because this is the third of its kind on the list! Maybe it’s the lack of oxygen 😉 Either way, this sensational sci fi does a lot to build up the bonds of the crew, drawing us into their circle and making us take every heart-plummeting step with them… until by the end I felt like I’d befriended them too!
And that’s all… for now! (I swear, I have so many more!) Do you agree with any of my picks? What are some of your favourite fictional friendships? Let me know in the comments!
I don’t think I have ever felt a friendship that was more heartwarming than the one of the Companions in the original Dragonlance Trilogy. I read those books during a very dark time of my life, and it made me feel a part of something as crazy as that may sounds. I’ll always remember those books for making me feel how powerful real and true friendships can be😊

Yes! Dragonlance really had some great moments. And they were all so different but still patient and understanding about each other’s quirks.
I used to spend hours in the library reading those books in middle school. At the time there was some rough stuff going on with my family and I used reading to avoid going home. I don’t know what your situation was, but these books really took me out of my life and immersed me in another world for a while. So it doesn’t sound crazy to me at all that you found some comfort in them.

So good to hear someone else loved these books as well, and under different, but at the same time similar circumstances. For me it was an escape from bullying that I was going through at that time, and like you I spent hours with those novels, just escaping the world for a bit, and immersing myself into a fantastic world, filled with characters that I could at times relate to very much, especially Raistlin😊
Thanks for sharing your story, this made me smile! 😊

Gosh, I haven’t thought of Dragonlance in years, and here I find a crew of people who read it in middle school just like I did.
Not sure why the early teens are the time when the SHTF in our families and other relationships, but that always seems to be how it is. This is a good reminder of the heavy responsibility on authors to provide an immersive escape for people who are going through a tough time.
Raistlin was a fascinating character, and I also liked … how did he spell his name? … Tas?

Haha, it’s amazing to see how many people like Dragonlance still: so great, thank you😊
It’s really a fun series, and honestly talking about it here, really makes me want to get the novels out again, and start rereading them…it’s been too long😊
Yes…Good old Tasslehoff. He always was an incredibly fun character, who often provided some much needed comic relief 😊😊

I absolutely agree on Six of Crows, Red Sister, Skyward and all the friendship groups in Harry Potter. As you said, it’s not just the Golden Trio but the Marauders, the Silver Trio and loads of other great friendships going on in the background.
If I had to make a list of best fiction friendships, however, I would put Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens right at the top!

So glad you think so too!! I really agree with you there!
Ohhh I should’ve put them on the list- what an oversight!

I haven’t read all of these, but … killer nuns … how could I resist?
Thorin & company’s friendship with Bilbo is an interesting case because there are also class differences involved.
I would add the uneasy friendship between Snape and Dumbledore. Wish Snape had had more good friends.
In Ursula Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness, there is a remarkable friendship between two men who aren’t even the same species of human. The trust develops slowly over the book. There is some sexual tension as well because one of them from time to time turns into a woman.
In a book I just finished writing, the MC’s best friend is his little brother. They express their love for each other by wrestling all the time and punching each other.

I really love Thorin and Company and Bilbo- the dynamics are done so well 🙂
Oh that’s such a good one!
Ok I’m even more curious about Le Guin now!
And that’s lovely 🙂 I love sibling relationships in books 🙂

Gahhh I’ve read only a few of them *runs and hides*
HP was one of the first books that came to mind when I read the title of your post! It was great with Harry, Ron, and Hermione but it got even better once they got close to others like Neville, Ginny, and Luna. Skyward was so awesome too! Especially the slug (I count it as part of the friend group) 😉

In Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, the strange friendship between Kevin and Max is an astonishing blend of brains and brawn. But that’s just on the outside, Kevin being a tiny kid with a body fast betraying him but a brain big enough for ten. Max is the counterweight, a kid who’s huge but slow to understand, slow to respond. Together, tiny Kevin lodged on the shoulders of giant Max, they become Freak the Mighty, superheroes who defend the world. It’s their power founded on the belief that justice and equality should prevail that gives the characters, and thus the book, its internal strength. This is the way the world should be: those who need held by those who deserve. Reading the book, intended for middle school readers but captivating for all, will inform you who is needy, who has something to give. This is the kind of friendship I want and hope to offer. Had to find it in a book to figure it out.

I 100% agree about the friendships between the raven boys! I love that each of them has a unique personality but they all stick with each other through everything.
I’m only just starting Queen of Air and Darkness so I’m not sure what’s going to happen to finish out the trilogy but I really love Emma and Christina’s friendship! They’re so supportive of each other and Christina honestly always knows the right thing to say, we all need a friend like her.

This is such a great post! I loved Big Little Lies. Have you seen the show? The book was better, but it’s such a great cast and still pretty good compared to the book. The second season was done well. Loved the friendship that was formed in SOC. It was so different from your typical story between friends. 💖

Thank you!! Yeah I have seen the show- tbh I watched it too close to reading the book, cos I just couldn’t get over how much more I preferred the book. But I am curious about the second season- so glad it was done well 🙂 Me too!! And definitely! ❤

Legolas and Gimli are my favorite! While Merry and Pippin are so fun together and are such a great dynamic duo, I love how Legolas and Gimli learn to be friends despite their differences (and centuries of bad feelings), and I really love what that represents for us as humans. It gives me so much hope.

I came across your blog yesterday only and I am in love with your orangutan theme. 😆 Fictional friendships, if done right, are lovely. And I haven’t read any of the above books except Harry Potter. I know, I know, SoC is next on my list. I also love the Marauders more than the golden trio or even the twins. I guess it has something to do with the marauders all being in the past, and us readers getting only snippets of them.

A specific one doesn’t come to mind. I read a LOT of mysteries, and the main character often has a “sidekick” who helps solve the mysteries and is an essential part of the story. That kind of relationship appeals to me, and I think that’s one thing that I like about mysteries!

Skyward sounds so epic, and both of its covers are amazing! I can’t wait to read it! Also, I of course have to agree that the golden trio is the ultimate fictional friendship. I like how all of them are annoying in their own ways, but they’re still friends despite that. I think that that’s the case for a lot of friend groups–real or fictional. Everyone has personality traits that can be annoying when you’re friends with them long enough, but you stick together anyways!
Indomitable is the perfect word for Kaz! His crew is iconic, and I would love to meet them just once. Great list! 💛

The raven boys has one of my all time favourite friendships. Those guys are all so different you would not pair them together and get you can’t imagine seeing one without the other. The banter between them is also pretty awesome.
The six of crows friendships is the definition of unconventional, but for the context of the setting and the nature of the business it makes total sense and I adore the dynamic between them.

There’s an obscure young adult novel I read as a kid called The Wonderful Flight To The Mushroom Planet by Eleanor Cameron, about two boys who, with a little help from a mysterious neighbor, build a spaceship and fly to a hitherto unknown satellite of Earth.
The boys, David and Chuck, are perfectly complementary: David’s thoughtful and a bit of a dreamer, and Chuck is more active, and although it’s mostly an adventure story it’s really their friendship that holds it together.
There’s also a hilarious scene in which they prepare for their two-hour space flight by packing bags full of food. Voracious appetites are one thing they have in common.

Oh my gosh, I think I read that years and years ago! Is it a very retro sci-fi story? Are they asked to bring back a jar full of air from the mushroom planet?
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yes! And even reading it in the ’70’s it had a very retro feel, with the idea of two kids building a spaceship out of wood and scrap aluminum in a cave on the beach.

Wow. I can’t believe I’ve bumped into another person who read that book. What a great community.
Yes, the building a spaceship out of scrap sounds like something the Depression generation might do. And then they get to the planet and the air is breathable, they don’t need space suits …
I didn’t actually remember noticing their different personalities when I read it. Maybe I just took that stuff for granted at that time.
Thanks for the blast from the past!

I’ve definitely always been super intrigued by the Marauders friendship in Harry Potter, and seen as J.K. Rowling has kept adding more stuff about the world since the series finished I kind of wish she had written something more about their Hogwarts days!
And I really loved the friendships in Six of Crows and Red Sister as well. Great list! 🙂

I have The Raven Boys on my TBR List, but that’s not saying much. Who knows when I’ll get to it. I loved Six of Crows. Bardugo’s writing can’t be compared to others since her series were the first fantasy books I’ve read. I don’t know if I’d necessarily say it was full of romance because it felt more like the romance leaked into the story than being a focus of the story…But I agree it is great friendship book. I read a lot of literary fiction, so I’d add A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving to this list. One of my favorite books and the friendship is absolutely great. And one more friendship book, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
