I mean, as book bloggers, we hardly need to be told this 😉 But sometimes it’s just good to show our appreciation and talk about why authors ROCK OUR WORLD!
They give us BOOKS! We get to live vicariously through their characters and go for wild romps in their imaginations.
They bring people (okay characters) to life. I mean, don’t we all have book boyfriends/girlfriends/besties… sometimes they feel more real than actual people and they wouldn’t exist if not for authors!
They take us on adventures! As George R R Martin says: “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one.”
They create whole worlds for us to play in! Because of their worlds, we get to be children again, wonderstruck by new marvels and sensations. They bring our very imaginations to life.
They put their neck on the line. The very action of putting their thoughts out there is brave. And then so many of them go and write dark, intense, pushing-the-boundaries books out there- whether I always agree with their message or not, I respect their courage to do so.
They help us realise truths about reality. Using well trodden paths and archetypes and tropes, they open our eyes to things we may already know, but get to see with fresh fervour, as if for the first time.
They’re supportive of readers and often very helpful. I feel like there’s endless criticism of authors and they’re always coming under fire for something or other- yet they’re often happy to set the record straight and that’s cool of them. And I guess this is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately- and am definitely going to be discussing more shortly. I think it’s easy to fall into criticism and sometimes harder to think about all the positive ways strangers can impact us.
Are you grateful to authors? Do you have any other ways they’re awesome? Let me know in the comments!
Sometimes I just need an escape from reality and a good book gives me this! Great post 😁

Great post – agree with everything you say. I engage with lots of children’s authors on Twitter – they are great at posting messages for children in my class and have even offered some lovely post such as signed postcards, messages and bookmarks.

Excellent observations, all true. Something you hinted at but I’ll state more emphatically. Authors show and explain the other side of people, history, points of view, or incidents. They let us see that all of life is multidimensional.
It still amazes me how many people do not read – anything. Feeling grief here.

It is sad that many still don’t read. How can we learn anything new? I am anticipating reading 48 books this year. At least I will be learning 48 new things in 2020!

Good authors build platforms into the literary space from where other writers can launch their own vehicles.

You’ve managed to be accurate and cynical at the same time. And this is not necessarily a bad thing.

The comment wasn’t intended to be cynical, although I’m happy you’re validating it as accurate.

I think it’s important to highlight how important authors are to bring perspective and knowledge. A lot of misunderstandings and hate that happens in real life occur because people do not have enough understanding or perspective to understand the situation. I find that people who reads have an easier time to put themselves in other peoples shoes (as they have to understand the situation in the book).
Not sure if all of this made sense, but I hope I get my point across =)

I second this motion.
I once read a sarcastic article called “How To Be Petty.” It advised that the would-be petty person avoid fiction, especially fiction that showed multiple viewpoints on the same events. Reading such books might cause a person to expect that other people could have a different, equally valid take on any given conflict. “My God, avoid them!”
And you are sooo right about bravery. I think anybody is crazy who is wiling to work for years on a book, then take this deeply felt work of art and start showing it to an ever-widening circle of people, some of whom inevitably will think it is trash. First you show it to beta readers. (Scary.) Then to agents. (Scarier, and most of them aren’t in love with it.). Then, if all goes well, to editors (who want to change it). And we haven’t even got to the reading public yet.
Great post.

hahaha that’s brilliant!!
And absolutely!! The whole process is *terrifying*- so the fact that people do this is amazing and I think authors should be respected for their bravery 😀
Thanks!!

Good authors motivate me to work harder on my own writing. The wonderful books that authors write can help us forget about our own lives and issues. In short, they give us a wider lens to see everything!

I completely agree with everything you wrote here! I think the craziest thing that authors can do is create whole worlds that we’re able to immerse ourselves in along with characters who are totally fiction but our feelings for them are anything but. Whether I like a book or not, I’m always amazed by the creativity it takes to actually write a book. You go, authors 👏🏻

Agreed. And now that authors have to do most of their marketing, putting themselves out there takes even bigger guts and risks. I did my first Facebook live due to my author Facebook page launch (I should have done this for my website and my book) and I can still taste the anxiety in my throat.

A good author does so much more than just gives us something to read, he/she/they offer us the chance to dream up worlds and letting our imaginations run wild along with the author’s. That’s powerful and I can’t thank authors enough for giving us books. Seriously.

I love this post so much! I definitely get filled with an overwhelming sense of love and awe for authors from time to time, because they’re just incredible. We read a book so fast compared to how long it takes for an author to write and perfect their book! And as someone who likes to (attempt to) write novels, I’ve experienced firsthand how hard it is and I appreciate them so much for being able to actually stick through with it 😎💗

Aww, this is such a wonderful, positive post! I love it! Authors truly are amazing, and I really love how they’re able to create stories that had so many thought provoking ideas, and life-like characters. There’s no greater feeling than diving into a story and reading about individuals who act, feel, and think like real people! ❤

You really hit the nail on the head with all of these things!! Authors are deities upon this earth! They have been the source of my endless pain, but also endless joy. I’m the type of reader who is particular about characters, so when an author creates a character for me to love and cherish forever, I will forever be indebted to them. Plus, it’s not easy to create a whole world, plot and cast of characters with only your mind! Writing a book is just not easy, and I have major major respect for authors who can write books well!
