Hello all! As you may know, I recently moved and that meant (among other things) rearranging my bookshelves. And, as the marvellous fellow blogger Michael wisely told me, nothing makes you feel at home quicker than filling up new shelvesโฆ so of course thatโs what I did first ๐
Now, this may be a bit familiar, since I’ve taken shelfies before, and most of these are favourites from my 33 books Iโll take to the grave post. That said, I rearranged the order into something that resembles the logic of my mind- aka itโs not logical at all, but it makes sense to me ๐ Plus, I know we all not-so-secretly love casual book porn ๐
(sorry the quality of photos arenโt great- I need a better camera/to learn to take better photos ๐)
The first shelf is pretty straightforward- I started with fairy tale collections and then moved into retellings (including the McKillip, which I still haven’t read). Oh, and there’s some gothic in the middle, cos to my mind that’s a neat segue, which makes sense if you take into consideration thatย Hazel Woodย counts as both… but not all that much sense ๐
Second shelf is all about English classics… well, until I went on a fantasy bend. Basically I thought His Dark Materials fits with the theme because it’s a twist onย Paradise Lost… but there’s no reason for Six of Crows being there… (maybe cos they’re both dark fantasy… who knows!)
Moving swiftly on, I finished off with my classics collection (yes, Circeย is sandwiched in next to the Iliad, cos it is just that good!) Then I had a bit of poetry, followed by myย Harry Pottersย and some more fantasy. Again, I can’t really see the logic either- so if you want to make something up in the comments, go right ahead ๐ (I guess Rowling is a classicist, so she did draw on mythology… but I’m really reaching here).
Annnd lastly, I had another random shelf of classics- these are the ones that don’t fit (both literally and figuratively) because who knows where to put Kafka?! ๐
Hope you enjoyed that odd little romp through my bookshelves! And if any of you have any better reasoning/can explain the inner working of my brain to me, let me know in the comments!ย
Some good old Sunday book porn. Lol. I love how eclectic these books are… and yeah… no idea how else to arrange them. Lol. They look pretty well organised to me ๐

hehehe! Yeah I know- it’s so confusing- I keep wondering if I should completely redo it ๐

Technically, you could class Six of Crows as a modern classic. ๐ It fits right in there on that shelf.

hehehe! Excellent- that’s what I’ll go with as my reasoning ๐

Oooh you have a box set of LOTR! ๐ Confession time… I have been a total fan of Tolkien since forever (well, since I was about 11 when I first read The Hobbit) and yet to this day my copy of LOTR is made up of three slightly randomly bought volumes from totally different issues, all in paperback. Even the sizes don’t match. Whereas my ‘Silmarillion’ is the original 1973 edition that would have gone with those original 1966 Second Edition LOTR’s. I really must rectify that…

Yes! I love it so much, because it even matches my copy of the hobbit and Silmarillion (which wasn’t deliberate, just a happy accident ๐ ) hehehe! I have a lot of series like that though! And I love to have some of the original covers/editions!

There is much more organisation to your shelves than mine. Looks very neat and some kind of logic to groupings.
I have way too many books for my shelves so take a sort of tetris approach, basically arranging to fit all available space.

hehe thanks! I keep second guessing myself ๐
Oh that makes a lot of sense- I’ve done that before- but have given up with some books and just left them in boxes under my bed, so I just get to look at favourites and things I might want to reread soon.

I’ve read only a few pages from Norton’s Theory and Criticism, and that too on an e-reader. That book is that huge!?! ๐ฑ It’s just that I’ve never laid my eyes on a physical copy and … My God! ๐

Really relate to that- I’ve only dipped in and out of that one ๐ YES! It’s crazy huge!!

I’m jealous of the number of classics you’ve got!! I aspire to be at that level one day because classics are the BESTTTTT. LOTR up top, front & centre, you love to see it ๐ I’ve got those ones on the second shelf, along with other Tolkien novels & The Chronicles of Narnia bc I like to have my #1 faves at eye level :’) Such a fun tour of your shelves!! Thoroughly enjoyed that xx

Ah thank you- I have a lot from my degree- so they could be the type of book I have the most of! hehehe! I simply had to put it there ๐ I completely get that- and I feel like my Narnia collection would’ve gone well there… if my boxset wasn’t so weirdly ugly ๐ so it’s hiding out of sight, but still within reading distance ๐ (under my bed) Thank you!! xx

I moved house last year and I don’t think I truly felt settled in until I had unboxed my books and rearranged my shelves! Loved looking through what you have on your bookcase ๐ x

I arrange the shelves by genre and I mostly try not to mix it up. You could fix His Dark Materials with the retellings if itโs based on Paradise Lost.

I think that’s logical- but even my classics don’t really go together ๐ (and the problem with putting all the retellings together is it’s hard to make all the books fit on a shelf without running out of space) but I’m honestly tempted to redo the whole thing ๐

It looks good anyways and if you want to redo it, good luck!

I love having a nosey at peoples bookshelves! Staggered at the range of things you read, and great to see authors like Steinbeck in there.

hehe me too! hehe yeah there’s a lot of variety- which I think is why I struggled to put it in some semblance of an order ๐ Steinbeck is one of my favourites ๐

We try but frequent moving of bookcases because of decorating/building means they inevitably end up jumbled again.
We had to read ‘Of Mice and Men’ at school (40 years ago – gulp) and I was the only one who loved it enough to investigate his other books.

Always fun to have a peek at someone else’s bookshelves though invariably I end up thinking my own shelves are so messy by comparison……
