The Shakespeare Awards

the shakespeare awards 2.jpg

Yes I know I am seriously late to this party- so late that the cake has probably gone stale and all the guests have already left- but how could I not celebrate William Shakespeare’s 452nd Birthday/400th Deathday??? (Okay, the second one’s a little weird- and technically that’s next week, but whatever)

Originally I was just gonna publish my faves and be done with it- but then I thought it would be fun if *everyone* joined in. And thus the Shakespeare Awards were born (*whoo silent cheer*). Basically, there are ten categories where you can vote for your favourite/least favourite Shakespeare play. I’ll count up all the votes and then post the results on here!

So here be the rules:

  1. If you would like to cast a vote, write it in the comments or in your own post (but make sure you link back to me (The Orangutan Librarian) or your vote won’t be counted!)
  2. You can answer for as many categories as you like but only one vote per category as many times as you like (yes I changed the rules cos I’m a rule breaker).
  3. The arbitrary closing date I have picked is Monday 9th of May

And that’s it! Here are the categories, with my votes for each of them:

most tragic1. King Lear– because it is the only one to have ever made me cry- I watched McKellen’s magnificent performance online somewhere and was a wreck afterwards!

best comedy

2. Midsummer’s Night’s Dreamcos it’s got a bit of an edge to it- plus who doesn’t love (semi-evil) fairies?

most romantic shakespeare

3. Romeo and Julietyes it’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason. Plus it’s got a bit of misdirection going on, because it starts out in the comic fashion and then subverts everything into a tragedy.

most entertaining4. Macbeth– c’mon- this one gave us the three witches- it’s a no brainer. And it’s got some fun/freaky superstitions around it for actors.

best history

5. Richard III– for a long time this was just my outright favourite play- it’s so twisted (like Richard III’s spine- yes I just went there)

best sonnet.png

6. Like as the waves… Just cos.

best film adaptation

7. Al Pacino’s Merchant– I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this play- but Pacino makes everything, even a play as problematic as this, better.

most beautiful language

8. Richard II– cos that Hollow Crown speech is insane

9. Measure for Measure– the plot in this one makes no sense, the characters are mad and the genre flip flops back and forth! It’s safe to say this is one of the weirdest plays ever written.

most unpopular

10. Tempest– okay, okay, this one isn’t technically the most unpopular- and I suspect it’s a lot of people’s favourite- but I have just *never* liked this play. Someone I met once summarised this as: Prospero says “look at me, I can do magic… but I won’t”. (When I told an English teacher that they were horrified- but I still think it’s terribly accurate).

Alright- hope you enjoyed that- and now, *drumroll please*, over to you!

Sunshine Blogger Award #2!!

Happy (Easter) Sunday- hope you’re all having a nice relaxing day! It’s been raining non stop today- so what better way to bring a little sunshine into my life than to do this tag 😉 Thanks so much to the incredible Napoleon Split and Eve Messenger for nominating me to do this!!

The Award Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you!
  • Answer the 11 questions you were asked.
  • Nominate 11 other bloggers and let them know they were nominated.
  • Ask the nominees 11 questions

Napoleon Split’s Questions:

  1. What is one of your favourite words? Why?

Pontificate- because I just love the sound of pon-ti-fi-cat-ing :p

  1. What is the third book on your bookshelf (from the left)?

The Great Fairytale Tradition

great fairy tale tradition

  1. What was your favourite childhood series?

Well I had different ones at different ages, but Harry Potter was the first.

  1. What book would you recommend to everyone to read?

Ooh that’s hard- a book for everyone? Picture of Dorian Grey I reckon, cos it’s one I tend to recommend to people who don’t read much. It’s got a bit of everything: colourful characters, humour, descriptiveness, drama and villainy.

  1. If you could see any band in the world in concert, who would you see?

The Beatles! Although… they’re not exactly around anymore… What? No one specified that I couldn’t time travel in this question.

  1. Name your favourite bookstore to visit.

I’m gonna be totally boring for a change and go with Waterstones- the one in Picadilly- cos it’s pretty much the only bookshop in London that’s guaranteed to have whatever I want (well, it is the biggest in Europe).

  1. Name three book to movie (or miniseries) adaptations that you love.

Okay, gonna go full on old school here cos sometimes I just roll that way: East of Eden, Rebecca and Great Expectations.

  1. If you could invite any author over for tea, who would you choose?

Oscar Wilde! He’d be so entertaining! We’d have such a laugh! (I’m talking pre-Reading Gaol days of course- he might be a bit of a downer after that). (Again time travel wasn’t specifically disallowed for this question)

  1. Name one way in which the blogging community has changed your life.

One way? That’s so difficult! I guess it’s made me get out of my comfort zone on the internet and actually put myself out there for a change!

  1. If you could live anywhere, where would you live?

Mars. Mark Watney style. The only issue is that I’m not a botanist (well, that’s not strictly speaking the only issue…)

mars surface.jpg

  1. What is your favorite book that falls into the genre of mystery/thriller?

Great question! That’s not something I read so often, but I can tell you I liked Engleby a lot when I read it.

 Eve’s Questions:

  1. What are three things that make you laugh?

Seinfeld, Seinfeld and Seinfeld. Nah I’m kidding- it’s Seinfeld, Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm :p

  1. What’s your favourite daydream?

I *love* daydreaming about my characters in bizarre situations- cos I’m weird that way.

  1. Would you rather have the power to shapeshift or to make yourself invisible?

Shapeshift!! I mean, how cool would it be to turn into a bird or a cat or a dragon? (obviously, there would be no point transforming into a monkey- I’m already a monkey).

  1. What’s one of your favourite stupid pun jokes? (Example: “Why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side.”)

Haha that’s a good one! I like fangtastic puns about vampires and ghoulish ones about ghosts. Can’t think of any actual jokes off the top of my head.

  1. Do you like stickers?

Not especially

  1. What’s your favourite social media and why?

I use Facebook the most- but to be honest I have more of a love-hate relationship with it. Especially since they keep adding new features.

facebook dislike

  1. Do you sleep with the light on or off?

  1. If you performed in a talent show, what would your talent be?

Haha this made me laugh, cos I am not the kind of person that performs in talent shows- my skills aren’t exactly the kind of thing you can make a performance of- I imagine standing up in front of an audience going “look I drew a picture” :p

  1. Have you ever handwritten a letter? If yes, to whom did you mail it and when?

Yes I did actually- when my sister went on a gap year, we wrote letters to each other. The only issue is the mail was so bad that we barely got any letters across to each other. In the end we just went back to facebooking, but it was nice while it lasted.

  1. What’s your favourite thing to do with friends?

Loads of things! Most of them involve talking!

  1. Big or small, what’s something you’ve done that you’re really proud of?

Well today I woke up at 10 am- which I was pleased about cos the clocks went forward and usually I sleep in till 1 or 2 when that happens. Obviously that was a BIG thing I’m proud of :p

My Questions:

  1. If time travelling was an option, which historical figure would you most like to meet?
  2. And who would you like to meet if it wasn’t an option?
  3. When daydreaming about time travelling (c’mon we all do it!) do you worry about the butterfly effect?
  4. What are your feelings about James Bond?
  5. If you were a spy, what gadget would you most like to have?
  6. Would you make a good international superspy or a bad one? Why?
  7. How often do you fly in dreams?
  8. If you could reinvent the world- what colour would you make the sky?
  9. If you’d been born in the dark ages, do you reckon you’d have believed the earth was flat?
  10. On a scale of one to ten, how surreal do you feel like these questions are getting?
  11. I’ve run out of questions- do ten star jumps!

Real Neat Blog Award

mrs doubtfire hello

Yeah, I’m in a funny mood :p And sadly, no, this post has nothing to do with Mrs Doubtfire. I am just excited to do this tag! Thanks so much to Betwixt These Pages and Eve Messenger for nominating me for this award- they’re both awesome so you should definitely check them out?

1. Thank and link the blogger that nominated you.

2. Answer the 7 questions that the nomination has provided you.

3. Create 7 questions for your nominees.

4. Nominate 7 other bloggers.

1. Sometimes a book grows on us long after we’re done reading it, and we realize it was actually much better than when we first rated it. Has this happened to you, and which book was it?
Ooh that’s an excellent question- I often change my ratings on goodreads. Often I can be more generous to books, and then end up lowering my rating. But I also increase ratings from time to time. I think sappy romances tend to get a generic three star rating, but I’ll increase it later if I actually enjoyed it, like I did with Second Chance Summer.

second chance summer

2. What’s the scariest novel you’ve ever read?

Well I’m a bit of a scaredy cat, so I found Breathe (a children’s book) terrifying.

3. What is the most boring book you ever had to read for school?

Ooh that’s a great question- I’m not a big reader of non-fiction and I had to read some incredibly dry ones for University. The dumbest thing I ever read was Saussure- not a fan.

4. Do you speak more than language? If so, which ones?

Nope- sadly not. I’ve tried to brush up on my French after doing it for GCSE, but I don’t have enough patience.

5. Have you ever had a dream in which a book character appeared?

Yeah loads- funniest dream I ever had was when Saruman convinced me that he was not really the bad guy. Later, after Saruman had killed loads of people and was still running round with orcs, Aragorn said to me “how could you?”- and it was only at that point I realised I might have made a mistake- whoops! All this took place in my old primary school. Yeah, sometimes my dreams get weird…

6. What are the next three books on your TBR list?
Ahh my tbr is such a long list- I’m probably gonna write a whole post on it- but for now it includes Shadow of the Wind, followed by any one of the gazillion books I own but haven’t read yet (haha I know I didn’t make it to three, but can only give 20 on a list or none at all)

shadow of the wind

7. When you think of your favourite books, what are the first two to come to mind?

peter pan and wendy

And this:

  1. What’s your favourite Robin Williams movie? (ah look at me making this relevant to my random tangent!)
  2. In keeping with the weird theme, what’s your favourite story/book/movie where someone does a Mrs Doubtfire and dresses up as someone they’re not?
  3. I’m running out of questions related to Mrs Doubtfire…  Turn your itunes on shuffle- and “Jump Around” (the song at the beginning of the movie) to whatever song comes on- report results!
  4. Okay, now for a change of topic- who’s your favourite comedian?
  5. Barring Shakespeare and the Bible- which book would you say was most important to save in the event of the apocalypse?
  6. For Harry Potter fans: what do you think the boggart would turn into if you encountered it? For everyone else: what’s your biggest fear?
  7. Voldemort has just confessed his love for you, saying you are the only person that has ever managed to convince him that love exists- what do you say back to him?

Encouraging Thunder Award

Ahh we all made it to the end of the week. What a relief! Thanks so much to the awesome Paper Dragon who nominated me for this way back in January!

– Thank the person who nominated you.
– Post the Encouraging Thunder logo.
– Mention your purpose in blogging.
– Nominate others for the award.

Why I blog

Because I love books! I am completely obsessed- I love reading them, writing about them and talking to other people about them. I just cannot hold in all the *feels*. Sometimes I want to shout that love from the rooftops. And sometimes I want to rant and rave about them. Blogging is the perfect way to deal with all that surplus emotion. Basically, to sum up: “I read therefore I blog”.

I nominate:

Rosypop, Trust in the Words, Quirky Book Nerd, Books and Bakes, Analee, Diana Prince Reviews, Dreaming Through Literature, Calliope, emdoesbookreviews, Ebony Monaes Thoughts

Creative Blogger Award #2

The awesome Codie nominated me for this a while back- so thank you very much!- if you haven’t checked out Reader’s Anonymous yet, you can do so here, here and here (you seriously should- it’s fantastic!)

the creative blogger award

  • Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  • Share 5 facts about yourself.
  • Nominate some bloggers in return and notify them about their nomination.
  • Keep the rules in your post to make it easy for everyone to know what to do.

  1. My sister has started to sing in her sleep- she thinks it’s cool- I think it’s a little creepy
  2. My favourite member of the Beatles was George Harrison. Someone said to me once “everyone says that when they’re trying to be original”- my answer to that is “if I wanted to be “original” I’d say Ringo Star”.
  3. I love songs you can singalong to- especially Disney and musicals
  4. If you watch a musical with me, there’s a good chance I will sing over it
  5. At the moment, I can’t stop listening to Brahms’ Hungarian Dance. Every time I listen to it I keep picturing Basil Faulty saying “it’s Brahms third racket!”

Infinity Dreams Award #2

Thank you to Codie for nominating me and an especial thank you to Reinreads– I know I told I probably wouldn’t get round to this- but let’s face it, if you nominate/tag me for something, it may take months for me to get to it, but I can’t resist doing it in the end!

infinity dreams award

  1. Thank and follow the blog that nominated you
  2. Tell us 11 facts about yourself
  3. Answer the questions that were set for you to answer
  4. Nominate 11 bloggers and set questions for them

  1. Hmm if something interesting doesn’t happen to me fast, I’m gonna have to come out with things like “I’m 5ft5 and female”
  2. I once met Richard Curtis- which was interesting- but I was pretty star-struck, so I didn’t say anything- which was not so interesting
  3. I also got a hug off Bernard Hill once- which was nuts.
  4. On a different note, I really suck at directions
  5. Consequently, I got lost ten minutes from my house the other day
  6. And five minutes from my work :/
  7. I tend to panic if I don’t know where I am- which doesn’t help
  8. Other than that, I’m pretty good in an emergency
  9. For example, my oven caught fire last year, but I kept a cool head- I just filled up a bucket of water and dumped water on it.
  10. Speaking of fires, when one did happen in my building when I was in first year of uni, and the fire alarm woke me up in the middle of the night, I just got out of bed and left without taking anything. It was only after that I realised I had the answer to that question: what would you take if your building burned down? Turns out, for me it’s nothing.
  11. I say I woke up- in reality I slept through the alarm and my flatmate had to come in and wake me up. So probably the reason I didn’t take anything is cos I wasn’t really concious.

ReinReads’ Questions:

  1. What’s your favorite Christmas song?

Easily this one by the Pogues:

  1. Who’s your favorite fictional character?

I don’t have one- but at the moment I’m loving Baz from Carry On

  1. Are you more of a morning or a night person?

  1. What instantly reminds you of your childhood?

The Beatles! (And no, I was not born in the 70s, it just happened to be something my mum played a lot on the school run)

  1. Is there a book you reread every year?

I used to reread The Hobbit every year- but my copy is stuck in storage and I haven’t been able to get to it for a while- *sobs*

  1. Where do you buy your books?

Either second hand online, Waterstones, Book Depository, charity shops or Amazon

  1. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

Egypt- I’ve always been fascinated by the mummies.

  1. What’s on your wishlist for Christmas?

  1. What’s your favorite movie?

I don’t have one- but I do always feel like Lord of the Rings are my happy movies- so I suppose that’s sort of the same thing.

  1. What makes you feel better when you’re feeling down?

  1. What do you like best about yourself?

Aww that’s a nice question- but also really embarrassing to answer on the internet- my imagination and creativity I suppose *blushes*

Codie’s Questions:

  1. Would you rather only read your favourite book for the rest of your life, or read  different books except your favorite book?

Different books! I’m not much of a rereader at the moment (but I have been in the past- so if this actually happens I might regret this answer).

  1. Do you judge books by their cover?

  1. Physical books or ebooks?

Physical! (Although I am still a fan of ebooks for making my life easier)

  1. Do you pre-order?

  1. Favourite heroine-hero duo (movie, tv series, or book)?

I don’t know if they’re my favourite, but I’ve always liked Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs

  1. Least favourite genre?

Hmm well I usually say Sci Fi, but having read the Martian recently, I don’t know if I can still say that.

  1. Biggest pet peeve in books?

Pretentious drivel- I actually hate that more than poorly written trash- cos I hate things that are too try-hard.

  1. Have you ever felt a special connection with a protagonist before? If so, what book?

Loads of times! Honestly- one of the reasons I loved Isla and the Happily Ever After so much is because I related to the main character so much. The same is true of Cress and Daniel Deronda– don’t know what that says about my life- maybe someone out there is gonna piece that all together and come up with something?

  1. What is a book you love that everyone else hates?

I don’t know if everyone hates it per se, but I do know a lot of people think Isla and the Happily Ever After is the weakest in Stephanie Perkins’ series- but it’s my favourite!

  1. Favourite book turned movie?

Another hard one! I love Shawshank Redemption- but I’ve not read the book so I don’t know if it counts for this.

  1. Are you participating in any reading challenges this year? If so, which ones?

Maybe, haven’t really decided.

I nominate:

My Questions:

  1. What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
  2. What’s the most disappointing book you’ve ever read?
  3. What are your biggest book pet peeves?
  4. Cats or dogs?
  5. What song makes you happiest?
  6. What’s your favourite “happy” movie?
  7. Ever met anyone famous?
  8. What’s your favourite planet? (can anyone tell I’m running out of questions- it’s been a long week)
  9. I dare you to stand up and do the macarena!
  10. Not including reading, what’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time?
  11. If you could only ever read one book you’ve never read before and one book you have read to read for the rest of your life- what would they be?
