Songs I Wish Were Books

orangutan list

There are *so many* songs out there that inspire me and make me think “I’d love to read a book about this!” So when I saw this prompt for a Top Ten Tuesday a few years back, I wanted to do it… But forgot! Luckily, the brilliant Kat @Life and Other Disasters reminded me of it recently with an awesome follow up! So be sure to check it out if you like this topic!

Blank Space– I mean, let’s be real, I mostly want to fill this with Taylor Swift songs 😉 However, if I had to pick just one, I’d go with this because I think it’s got cheeky Gone Girl vibes and would make an excellent thriller. The lead would be charming and potentially sociopathic OR, even better, the final twist could be that the media got it all wrong and stitched up an innocent woman! (seriously, someone needs to write this book!)

Strange and Beautiful– call me masochistic, I just love stories about unrequited love. Preferably if it ends tragically…

Winter Winds– this is another one where I think it’d be interesting if the characters didn’t end up together. I just think it could be an interesting, character-focused story about people growing up in their early twenties in London (and I love books with a strong London setting!)

Blackbird– I just think this is beautiful and I can see the characters flying around… Actually that’s not a bad idea- it’d be really cool as a fantasy story! Someone write it please!

Ruby Tuesday– I imagine this would be nigh on impossible to pull off capturing the enigma of the titlular character… then again Taylor Jenkins Reid always pulls that off with her main characters… so maybe she should write it!

Galway Girl- this is another one where I can just picture the character… Not Ed Sheeran, I don’t really care about his part and would write him out of the narrative. It’s The Girl who is enigmatic and fascinating and I just want to read her story.

Homeward Bound– weirdly, out of all of Simon and Garfunkel’s narrative driven songs, this is the one that speaks to me the most, even though there’s less of a story to it. There’s just something about it that leaves me longing to know the full story. It could be a kind of modern-day Odyssey… with musicians!

Zombie– I mean, this song speaks for itself. It could be an amazing book about war. It’d be really cool to do it as a split timeline, during a conflict and after. Maybe even don’t say whose perspective the after perspective is from, so you don’t know who survived… *dun dun dun*

I Will Follow You Into the Dark– this could be a really cool paranormal fantasy, heavy on the romance 😉 On the note of fantasy…

Kashmir– this is super trippy and could make a really good, really odd book.

Bad Guy– a song for an anti-hero. A bit of a loopy one.

All These Things That I Have Done– another anti-hero-ish potential-novel. And if someone said they’d based a book on this, I’d definitely read it!

Tomorrow– yes I know this is from a musical, but I always had lingering questions about whether tomorrow ever came for this character!

Shine On You Crazy Diamond– there’s actually crazy story about this song. The way I heard it told, it was a tribute to Syd Barrett, a troubled former member of the band. Bizarrely, when they were recording the song, he turned up, so different that they almost didn’t recognise him, then left. I’d love for someone to do a fictionalised version of it (only have him be missing instead of kicked out of the band and turn up for one performance in a sort of mystical fashion at a festival).

Mad Woman– I know I said that I said I wouldn’t just fill this up with Taylor Swift songs, but I can’t help including just one more! And every time I listen to this lately, I can’t help but think this would be a nice spin on the whole mad woman in the attic trope!!

And that’s all for now! Do you agree with any of these? Would you tell any of these stories differently? And what songs would you like to see become books? (by Taylor Swift or otherwise! 😉) Let me know in the comments!

My Pandemic Playlist

playlist

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been putting together an apocalypse is nigh pandemic playlist (because this is clearly a very productive use of my time 😉). I was really inspired to share it by the Sullivan Spin, after his excellent post on why Right Here Waiting for You is the perfect song for isolation (he makes a compelling case!) I don’t have nearly as good an argument for putting these songs on the list- in fact some of these are wildly inappropriate- so be prepared for some mindless ramblings… enjoy!

End of the Line– let’s start with the fact that the world is ending (kidding! …sort of…)

Over and Done With– may as well embrace the world as it is!

Don’t Stand So Close to Me– time to social distance!

I Think We’re Alone Now– hmm, not so bad, time to dance like no one’s watching… (and maybe catch Umbrella Academy on Netflix while we’re at it)

The Cave– alright, I’m craving company now…

Owner of a Lonely Heart– ok, is anyone out there?

Wish You Were Hereseriously, anyone?!

Dancing in the Dark– guess not.

Paint it Black– may as well embrace *the darkness*

We didn’t start the fire– yes, things are heating up now 😉

Take it Easy– okay time to take a break from the angst for a hot minute.

Stay Stay Stay– but I know I’ve got to stay indoors.

All You Had to Do was Stay– seriously, this is my one job.

Run Boy Run– doesn’t stop me feeling restless!

Thriller– have you seen what it’s like out there?! Scary stuff! On that note…

Zombie– cos the world’s a little crazy right now (no, I don’t think we’re at risk of being zombified, unless you think that we could become couch-potato-zombies, in which case we’re already there!)

Youngblood– still reasons to be upbeat 😉

Whatever it Takes– let’s not be all doom and gloom- we can fight this!

Fight Song– yup, still fighting it (by doing nothing). Love the Piano Guys version as well 😊

Let it Go– at the same time, it’s not totally upto us (also, I mean it when I say I love piano guys)

Don’t look back– weirdly this is one of those songs that sounds like a downer, but is actually pretty upbeat… which contrasts some of the other songs on this list!

Alright then! That’s all for now! What’s on your pandemic playlist? Let me know in the comments!

One Lovely Blogger Award – Musical Edition

one-lovely-blog.png

Because it’s Saturday and I’m gonna have a lazy day reading (I’d say don’t judge- but you guys aren’t gonna judge me for that 😉 ) I thought I’d do a chilled out post today. Thank you to the *lovely* blogger Amelia in Hull for nominating me to do this award!

THE RULES FOR THE ONE LOVELY BLOGGER AWARD

  1. Each nominee must THANK the person who nominated them and link their blog in the post.
  2. They must include the rules and add the blog award badge as an image.
  3. Must add 7 facts about themselves and then nominate 15 people.

Tomorrow I’ll be discussing a *controversial* opinion where more than 90% of people are bound to disagree (cos that’s the rating for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes)- so I thought it might be fun to give some musical related facts about me:

  1. I have sung in the rain- more than once 😉
  1. Cabaret *FREAKED ME OUT*- that scene with the Hitler Youth *shivers*. Also this guy…
  1. I have a soft spot for the Wizard of Oz cos it used to be one of the only three videos my grandparents owned (the other two were Donald Duck and Marx Brothers)- we used to visit them every weekend, so I pretty much know that movie by heart.
  1. My history teacher took us to see Les Miserables when we were studying that period of French history- it wasn’t entirely relevant, but it was fun!
  1. Speaking of which, I have several versions of a lot of the Les Mis songs on my Itunes- for “On My Own” I have the official soundtrack, the movie version, the anniversary edition and the French one #noshame
  1. I’ve recently started listening to Hamilton *a lot*. I shouldn’t even like it cos I’m British and we’re still butthurt about the war of independence (JK! if you believe that, you need a strong dose of British humour- I prescribe Oscar Wilde and Austen 😉 )
  1. If you asked me to pick a favourite I would laugh… and then cry. *Some* of my faves are: the aforementioned Les Mis, Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver, Singing in the Rain, Bugsy Malone and Sound of Music (and that’s not even including Disney or the Muppets!)

My Nominees:

Vicky, Wonderfilled Reads, Franlaniado, Kristin, Read and Rant and Rock and RollAlways Trust In Books, I’ve Read This, Roseread, Embuhlee, Pooja, Anna and Nicole

So are any of you also fond of musicals? What are your favourites? Let me know in the comments!
