Sunshine Blogger Award #5

I haven’t done one of these in two years- SAY WHAT?! And since I was recently nominated by a couple of people, I figured it was about time. Thanks so much to the lovely Keira @Headphones and Hyperbole– who talks a lot about music and books- what could be better? And thank you to the awesome Rachael @Dogearedpages– whose enthusiasm comes through in her wonderful book blog 😀 Definitely worth checking both of them out!

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and provide a link back to their blogging site.
  2. Answer the questions.
  3. Nominate 11 other bloggers and ask them 11 new questions.
  4. Notify the nominees about it by commenting on one of their blog posts.
  5. List the rules + display the sunshine blogger award logo on your site or on your post.

Keira’s questions…

1.      You have been arrested. What is the crime you are most worried about being falsely accused of?

Gosh- what a question! I’d hate to be falsely accused of anything- but I figure going down for a murder I didn’t commit would be pretty awful… especially since I don’t have the brains of Andy Dufresne to get myself out of that situation.

chocolate2.      What is your favourite type of chocolate? (Can you tell that it’s Easter…)

Oh man I love ALL THE CHOCOLATE- but if you really want the way to my heart, you’ll get there with a Ferrero Rocher

3.      Highlighting or underlining?

Probably underlining cos I get lazy/don’t colour code things properly… but that doesn’t usually stop me trying.

4.      What is your favourite fantasy creature?

rhaegal dragon

5.      What is your biggest pet peeve?

(Oh boy, you’re going to wish you never asked…)

Hypercorrection. Every time someone uses a reflexive pronoun incorrectly, I wince. Every time I see an Oxford comma, I die a little inside. In fact, I was reminded of this recently when #OxfordComma was trending on twitter and *a lot* of philistines *ahem* misinformed souls were using examples that weren’t just grammatically incorrect, they also created the very problems they sought to avoid. Observe this sentence without hypercorrection:

“Highlights of Peter Ustinov’s global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800 year old demigod and a dildo collector.”

And now with hypercorrection:

“Highlights of Peter Ustinov’s global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800 year old demigod, and a dildo collector.”

This actually *creates a subordinate clause*- meaning you have now unequivocally called Nelson an 800 year old demigod- meaning this has obscured rather than clarified the intended meaning (and the same is true for the much touted dedication example). Ironically, there was no confusion in the sentence before BECAUSE THE RULE OF NOT PUTTING EXTRA COMMAS IN LISTS ALREADY WORKS!! This entire rule was invented for people who don’t know how to read properly to begin with… and makes a mockery of people with basic literacy! *slow clap for stupidity ruling the day*

(see, bet you regret asking 😉 )

6.      Do you prefer sparkling water or still water?

Still water- I *hate* sparkling water cos it makes me thirsty- what is the point in water that makes you thirsty?!

7.      Are you the type of person to make decisions with your head or your heart?

thinking monkey

I’m the kind of person/monkey to make decisions with my heart and then second guess them until I end up more or less making them with my head 😉

8.      What do you do when you are stuck on something and need an epiphany?

I work on something else or just write in circles until I come up with something.

9.      What is your happy place?

Bed, surrounded by books 😉 Then I can be *anywhere*…

book bed
seriously wish this was my actual bed…

10. Do you have any strange or unexplainable fears, and if so what?

*Coughs awkwardly* yup- I’m mortally afraid of doctors…

11. Where would you least like to go on holiday and why? (Real life, or fictional).

Westeros wouldn’t exactly be the best place for a holiday, would it? I mean, you’d be strolling along in King’s Landing, when HOLY SHIT WAS THAT A DRAGON WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE…

Or you’d be chilling out in Winterfell when OH MY OLD GODS AND THE NEW- IS THAT AN ICE ZOMBIE- ARYA COME SAVE ME!

Or you’d take a nice boat trip to Essos when WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THAT PERSON’S FACE? Oh, it’s called Greyscale, IT’S HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS? WHY AM I NOT COMFORTED BY THAT?

You get the idea. It would be a very stressful place to go on vacation.

Rachael’s questions…

  1. What’s your favourite lesser known book or series and why?

all that still matters at all

All That Still Matters at All is by a Hungarian poet, which doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves in the English speaking world.

  1. Describe the best food you’ve ever read about in a book.

That has to be one of those delectable scenes from Harry Potter:
feast hogwarts great hall.gif

He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup, and, for some strange reason, peppermint humbugs.”

  1. Would you rather be a character in a whimsical magical tale or an epic space opera?

Whimsical magical tale- far less drama, a lot more peculiarities.

  1. If you could change something about your favourite book, what would you change?

Well, nothing, or it wouldn’t be my favourite book 😉 The thing is, one of my favourites is the Idiot by Dostoevsky and is largely thought to be a bit of a flop… but I somehow ended up loving it, imperfections and all, so I wouldn’t change a thing. I might like a Smaug spinoff from the Hobbit though 😉

  1. Why did you start blogging?

Honestly? To rant about Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. I really didn’t like that book and no one wanted to hear me vent about it (anymore) in real life 😉

  1. What is your most controversial bookish opinion?

Well, I was just reminded recently that I really don’t like Handmaid’s Tale… That thought’s not gonna win me any friends 😉

  1. Personal library or public library?

Tough question! I mean, there are more books in a public library, but I guess I end up more attached to the ones in my personal collection.

  1. What is your favourite thing about yourself?

Posable thumbs- useful for turning pages in books 😉 (also self-deprecating humour 😉 )

  1. What book character would you name a pet after? (and what kind of animal is the pet?)

Ooh hard question! I don’t have a pet, so you’re going to be in for some wish fulfilment. I love literary names for cats: Lila Bard, Kaz Brekker, Raskolnikov… Today though I feel more like a dog person and think Paddington would be a fun name! Also, I can’t take credit for this one, cos was in Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating, but Winnie the Poodle is the best fictional dog name ever! (let’s be real though, if I ever was lucky enough to get an actual dog, I’d call it something silly like Mr Snuggles Fluff Monster the Third… poor imaginary future pooch 😉 )

confused dogs

10.      Where would you go if you could go anywhere within driving distance (like 5 hours max) right now?

land's end cornwall

Hmm right now I think I fancy going to Cornwall, cos I’ve not been in a while and the last series of Poldark is doing a wonderful job of selling the place (I’m really impressionable 😉 )

11.      Who is your book boyfriend (or girlfriend)?

Gonna go with an oldie but a goodie (sorta): Victor Vale!

My questions:

  1. Where’s the best place you’ve ever been on holiday?
  2. Do you have any favourite fictional (or non fictional) libraries?
  3. What’s your guiltiest pleasure read?
  4. What’s your most unpopular bookish opinion?
  5. Do you have a bookish pet peeve?
  6. What book character gets on your last nerve?
  7. If you could wear any item of clothing from a book- what would it be? (magical or not)
  8. Who would you rather kiss/marry/kill when the choices are Lord Voldemort, Sauron and Iago? (meanest question ever, I know 😉 )
  9. Who’s the best bookish baddie you’ve read about lately?
  10. Would you rather be the villain in a story or the hero? Why?
  11. Do you have any exciting upcoming reading plans?

Tagging: Sam @Rivermoose Reads, Zezee, Journey into Books, Hammock of BooksSophie Li, Laleh Chini, Crystal @Lost in Storyland, The Crooked Pen, Crazy Cat Lady, Fadwa @Word Wonders and the Reader’s Bay

And that’s all for now! What fictional place would you least like to go on holiday?  And what bookish names would you/have you called your pet? Let me know in the comments!

Sunshine Blogger Award With Some Seriously Sunshiney Questions!

Hello all! Today is officially the start of winter… so what better time for a little EXTRA sunshine?! Plus these questions are insanely good!! I’m really excited to have been nominated by two of my favourite people on here- Dani @Perspective of a Writer and Nel @Reactionary Tales because that means I get the chance to SHOUT about how much I love them and why you all need to check them out (because you really, really do!) They both run seriously AMAZING blogs and are completely unique, lovely humans!!

(Graphic is by the absolutely amazingly talented Dani– I told you she was cool, didn’t I?)

Do you prefer all happy movies, or occasional sad movies?

It does depend on my mood- still, while I do like the occasional sob over a good movie, I largely stick to happy ones, like a Disney movie or a musical (then again, I class LOTR as happy- not sure I’m always a good measure of what “happy” is…)

What is the one food that always makes you happy?

What is the sunshine on your blog?

You guys!! 😘

What is your favourite  wacky “fun” day?

Oh I’m a party animal- my favourite, wacky fun day would be any day I get off to just lie in bed and read books (preferably while drinking hot chocolate with Baileys- rock on!)

taking a day off

Where is your corner of sunshine in your home?

What is your favorite color or colors?

“Red and yellow and pink and green,
Purple and orange and blue…”

I don’t technically have a favourite, so I’m going with “rainbow”

What is the one movie (or drama) that always makes you happy?

Well, I mentioned this earlier, but Lord of the Rings is my happy film!

lord of the rings movies.jpg

I’m going to take a leaf out of Dani’s book and use the same questions, but I’m nominating just a few people who always make me smile (even if this may not be their thing 😉 )

Bookstooge, Lucinda, Carrie, DrewMichelDaley and Sam

(as usual no pressure to do it)

So what’s the most sunshiney thing in your life right now? Let me know in the comments!

Sunshine Blogger Award #2!!

Happy (Easter) Sunday- hope you’re all having a nice relaxing day! It’s been raining non stop today- so what better way to bring a little sunshine into my life than to do this tag 😉 Thanks so much to the incredible Napoleon Split and Eve Messenger for nominating me to do this!!

The Award Rules

  • Thank the person who nominated you!
  • Answer the 11 questions you were asked.
  • Nominate 11 other bloggers and let them know they were nominated.
  • Ask the nominees 11 questions

Napoleon Split’s Questions:

  1. What is one of your favourite words? Why?

Pontificate- because I just love the sound of pon-ti-fi-cat-ing :p

  1. What is the third book on your bookshelf (from the left)?

The Great Fairytale Tradition

great fairy tale tradition

  1. What was your favourite childhood series?

Well I had different ones at different ages, but Harry Potter was the first.

  1. What book would you recommend to everyone to read?

Ooh that’s hard- a book for everyone? Picture of Dorian Grey I reckon, cos it’s one I tend to recommend to people who don’t read much. It’s got a bit of everything: colourful characters, humour, descriptiveness, drama and villainy.

  1. If you could see any band in the world in concert, who would you see?

The Beatles! Although… they’re not exactly around anymore… What? No one specified that I couldn’t time travel in this question.

  1. Name your favourite bookstore to visit.

I’m gonna be totally boring for a change and go with Waterstones- the one in Picadilly- cos it’s pretty much the only bookshop in London that’s guaranteed to have whatever I want (well, it is the biggest in Europe).

  1. Name three book to movie (or miniseries) adaptations that you love.

Okay, gonna go full on old school here cos sometimes I just roll that way: East of Eden, Rebecca and Great Expectations.

  1. If you could invite any author over for tea, who would you choose?

Oscar Wilde! He’d be so entertaining! We’d have such a laugh! (I’m talking pre-Reading Gaol days of course- he might be a bit of a downer after that). (Again time travel wasn’t specifically disallowed for this question)

  1. Name one way in which the blogging community has changed your life.

One way? That’s so difficult! I guess it’s made me get out of my comfort zone on the internet and actually put myself out there for a change!

  1. If you could live anywhere, where would you live?

Mars. Mark Watney style. The only issue is that I’m not a botanist (well, that’s not strictly speaking the only issue…)

mars surface.jpg

  1. What is your favorite book that falls into the genre of mystery/thriller?

Great question! That’s not something I read so often, but I can tell you I liked Engleby a lot when I read it.

 Eve’s Questions:

  1. What are three things that make you laugh?

Seinfeld, Seinfeld and Seinfeld. Nah I’m kidding- it’s Seinfeld, Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm :p

  1. What’s your favourite daydream?

I *love* daydreaming about my characters in bizarre situations- cos I’m weird that way.

  1. Would you rather have the power to shapeshift or to make yourself invisible?

Shapeshift!! I mean, how cool would it be to turn into a bird or a cat or a dragon? (obviously, there would be no point transforming into a monkey- I’m already a monkey).

  1. What’s one of your favourite stupid pun jokes? (Example: “Why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side.”)

Haha that’s a good one! I like fangtastic puns about vampires and ghoulish ones about ghosts. Can’t think of any actual jokes off the top of my head.

  1. Do you like stickers?

Not especially

  1. What’s your favourite social media and why?

I use Facebook the most- but to be honest I have more of a love-hate relationship with it. Especially since they keep adding new features.

facebook dislike

  1. Do you sleep with the light on or off?

  1. If you performed in a talent show, what would your talent be?

Haha this made me laugh, cos I am not the kind of person that performs in talent shows- my skills aren’t exactly the kind of thing you can make a performance of- I imagine standing up in front of an audience going “look I drew a picture” :p

  1. Have you ever handwritten a letter? If yes, to whom did you mail it and when?

Yes I did actually- when my sister went on a gap year, we wrote letters to each other. The only issue is the mail was so bad that we barely got any letters across to each other. In the end we just went back to facebooking, but it was nice while it lasted.

  1. What’s your favourite thing to do with friends?

Loads of things! Most of them involve talking!

  1. Big or small, what’s something you’ve done that you’re really proud of?

Well today I woke up at 10 am- which I was pleased about cos the clocks went forward and usually I sleep in till 1 or 2 when that happens. Obviously that was a BIG thing I’m proud of :p

My Questions:

  1. If time travelling was an option, which historical figure would you most like to meet?
  2. And who would you like to meet if it wasn’t an option?
  3. When daydreaming about time travelling (c’mon we all do it!) do you worry about the butterfly effect?
  4. What are your feelings about James Bond?
  5. If you were a spy, what gadget would you most like to have?
  6. Would you make a good international superspy or a bad one? Why?
  7. How often do you fly in dreams?
  8. If you could reinvent the world- what colour would you make the sky?
  9. If you’d been born in the dark ages, do you reckon you’d have believed the earth was flat?
  10. On a scale of one to ten, how surreal do you feel like these questions are getting?
  11. I’ve run out of questions- do ten star jumps!

My Nominations:

Aspiring Blue Cat

Lucia R

A Novel Glimpse

Dreaming through literature

I Wuv Books

Galaxial Word

Tumbling into Wonderland

(I sincerely apologise for the bizarre questions)

Sunshine Blogger Award

Thank you to Zezee for the nomination! I can safely say this was the most fun I’ve ever had doing a blog!

The Rules:

  •    Answer the 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
  •      Nominate some wonderful bloggers and write 11 questions for them to answer.

The Questions I got:

1. Close your right eye and stare at the big toe on your left foot. Is it bigger?

Ermmmm… no?

2. Jump on your bed for 15 seconds and sing your favorite childhood song.

Haha well if you insist… Also the song I sang was “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts” (if you’re interested)

3. Give your best friend a big ol’ hug just because.

I gave her one yesterday- does that count?

4. Try to read the whole page of some complex, classic novel upside-down. Is it easier?

5. Scratch your head and stroke your chin and say Hmm… when someone comes near.

I did this- my family now think I’m insane.

6. A bag of tricks. (I had to, it rhymed.) Name 6 things you would do to trick a goblin into returning your laptop, which he stole.

  1. Offer him a banana
  2. Tell him he can keep it for fifty quid
  3. Laugh in his face because it’s not even worth fifty quid
  4. Probably nothing else- I really need a new laptop and this would give me an excuse to get one
  5. Also- would insurance cover this? I mean it was stolen after all?
  6. On second thoughts, negotiating with an insurance company seems worse than arguing with a goblin- I’d do my first answer.

7. Name 7 things you’re really enjoying right now. (Books, shows, socks, whatever)

  1. Heroes Reborn- cos I’m a sucker for superheroes and I loved the old show (just season 1 though)
  2. V E Schwab- her books are awesome. I cannot wait for the next one to come out
  3. Radley bags- I’ve just got a second hand one and I’m in love
  4. My new coat- it was love at first sight (did I mention I have a shopping problem?)
  5. Sexy work clothes (seriously- I meant it when I said I had a shopping problem)
  6. Hot guys (this list is getting progressively more shallow)
  7. Lions and Al Pacino- cos they’re fun to paint

8. What are 8 things you hate? Negative question? What are 8 things you would place in a time capsule to give to your future self? (This can occur at any age and time machines are possible.)

8 Things I hate:

  1. Badly written books
  2. Pretentious books
  3. Extremism
  4. Jeremy Corbyn (ooh this is getting political)
  5. Nazis
  6. Tuna
  7. Brussel sprouts
  8. Brussels

8 Things for the time capsule:

  1. My old diary from when I was five- it’s literally the funniest thing ever. I used to read it to people for a laugh and I reckon I’d still enjoy it when I get old.
  2. My current TBR- to see how much I managed to read
  3. The first draft of my first novel
  4. A library book- just to see how big the fine will be- I’m such a rebel
  5. An old tin box with loads of random ticket stubs in it, so I can look at it and wonder “why on earth did I keep this?”
  6. A random newspaper clipping (as above)
  7. Some cereal- I want to see how long it would last.
  8. A panda

9. There’s a beach with a leprechaun, a dragon, and a fairy. You come along and have to make friends with one of them to stay on the beach. Who do you make friends with and what 9 gifts would you give it?

The dragon (duh- I love dragons). I would give them something shiny, some lego, a rock, an apple (cos that’s healthier than all the garbage they usually eat), a budgie (in case they didn’t like the apple), a copy of the Hobbit (cos I’d like to hear their thoughts- was it an accurate representation? Did they find it offensive? Etc), a copy of the movies (ditto), a space hopper and my undivided attention.

10. What are 10 things you would like to line up in a row and then topple over?

11. Shit, dammit. I forgot it’s 11 questions. Hmm…11. Umm…what’s 11 x 77?

847- and yes I used a calculator. I have no shame.

The Questions I’ll Give (I can only hope you find my questions as entertaining as the ones I was given):

  1. What is your favourite Disney movie? Why?
  2. Have you ever had an extreme case of déjà vu? What happened?
  3. What is your three top book genres?
  4. If you could only ever live in one season all year long- which one would it be? And why?
  5. What are the top 5 things that make you smile?
  6. If you were a mutant (like in X Men) would you side with Professor X or Magneto? Why? And what would your power be?
  7. Sing the cheesiest song in your repertoire at the top of your lungs- which song was it?
  8. You encounter a ghost/demon/scary house- how do you react? What do you do?
  9. If you could go back in time to any period in history, *when* would you go to? Who would you like to meet? What would you do?
  10. Would you survive the Zombie Apocalypse? How? (I’m looking for tips :p )
